Private Training or College

Hi

Can anyone give me their views on whether studying with a private training company is any better than a college - apart from the extortionate fees!!

And also, how do other colleges/training companies teach the 2 optional units - my present training company have told me that Personal Tax is only taught as a day class - I study in the evening!!

Cheers

    Re:Private Training or College

The quality of tuition you receive at any centre will vary as all colleges, private training providers and tutors who deliver are different of course, and it can change from term to term, year to year.

However private training providers generally appear to be more flexible. Some colleges have adopted this approach but most work within academic years.

At Eagle Education and Training Ltd (Private) for example we offer enrolment for classroom tuition in February and August so you can roll off one level onto the next during these periods.

Classes are only one night a week and are very focussed and structured taking up the minimum amount of your time but ensuring you can apply your knowledge before you leave. Your time of course is very vaulable! Then we expect our learners to carry out more question practice at a time that suits them.

Foundation level is delivered in 6 months and we haven't yet had a pass rate below 90%

We also offer a mix of quality home learning and classroom tuition so if a unit does not fit in with your work or other committments, then you can study that unit with full support on a flexible basis. You are provided with high quality learning resources and regular face to face, individual support.

Colleges fees generally are lower than a private provider because as well as your fees they can receive a payment from the relevant government body. From my experience working at a college we always received more per head than a private provider. Private providers mostly charge full cost to the individual unless they can offer you a funding scheme. Most people are not aware of this. So private providers are offering excellent value for money.

You need to research each provider in your area and way up the costs V the benefits. Our learners comment it is worth paying extra to the provider who meet their needs as they save valuable time having tuition that meets their needs and increases their chances of a first time pass....therefore saving in resit costs and revision courses.

    Good luck with your choice.

    Re:Private Training or College

In my experience, a private training company (ftc) was a massive improvement on my local college. The local college were completely incompetent at updating AAT on skills test results, we were lucky if the tutor turned up to a class, the tutors changed regularly, and they generally gave off the impression that they couldn't care less. FTC (and I understand that BPP are very similar) were really refreshing in that they were organised and you felt like you really got your moneys worth with them. I did have a similar problem to you in that I was on the evening class, and they only offered business tax in the day, but as it was only 4 days my employer luckily let me take the days off work. That was my only problem with them tho.

    Re:Private Training or College

    Hi,

I looked at going to a college or a Private College. I am self funded so money was a big deal to me, although I ended up going to a private college. I did a lot of shopping around and ended up going for FTC. For the following reasons

    1. I could choose my study times (Evenings, days, sometimes they do weekends classes, but also do some weekend revision classes. Only 1 night a week per subject.
    2. I could set the pace. I completed Intermediate in 6 months, and I am now looking to complete Technician in 6 months also.
    3. You can study the whole year - to me this is the biggest point. You just get into the rhythm of studying again and then you have to stop because it is summer break etc.
    4. If you move, you can transfer with the colleges but still receive the same level of service.
    5. Classes, to me, seem to be very exam driven, which is good. From the start of your course to the end you are given exam style questions, which in turn caused me to panic less when I sat my first exams in June, as I understood what the examiner was asking.
    6. You can pay subject by subject, before you start the subject, although it is cheaper to pay for the entire year.
    7. If you decide to go onto to ACCA, CIMA etc you can stay with the college.

I have to say that I have been very happy at a private college, and that I have meet students who were at colleges and have transferred over to private colleges as they were not happy there.
Anyway I hope this helps you.

I did my first year at a college, then moved to FTC to do my intermediate and technician.

The standard of tuition is excellent and well worth the extra.
