which text books??

hi
i have just enrolled for technician level, and im quite confused about the text books.
at the interview i asked for a list of text books needed, but the tutor said all i need is the bpp unit 19 - personal tax book. he then went on to give me the impression that no other books were needed as he works solely on his own handouts, presumably from different authors. i tried explaining that i would really like to have a "set" of books for all units as i tend to need as much help as possible, and to refer to constantly, but he was not able to come up with an answer, i found this pretty bad, as the other two levels at different colleges had a "set" list for us to buy and work from.
is this a normal procedure for tech. level? should i just go and buy a set of books from whichever author?
i just wanted to be able to at least familiarise myself with the contents before attending my first lesson
thanks for any advice/suggestions etc

Re:which text books??
Hi GG
You should get a list of books that you require and its pretty bad that your college is not helping:
There are 3 core papers plus a project that you have to do.
Unit 8 & 9 conbined books - Managing Performance and controlling resources.
Unit 10 - Managing Accounting Systems and People
Unit 11 - Drafting Financial Statements
Then you can choose your options, which must be 2 from the list:
Unit 18. Preparing Personal Tax
Unit 19. Preparing Busines Tax
Unit 17.Implementing audit procedures
Unit 15. Operating a cash management and credit control system
The books I have used are from BPP, but you can get from FTC or any publisher.
I have all the books for the core subjects, assessment kits and passcards if you want. I was going to put them on ebay.
Let me know and I'll keep them to one side if you want. The only one's I would recommend buying directing from BPP is the tax papers. Buy those when you are ready for them. Taxation does change so I left those until last.
Hope this helps

Re:which text books??
thanks for that petrolmonkey
i have bought the one my tutor told me (unit 19 - personal tax), so i can at least go through that, and thats a bpp one, so it maybe would be sensible to go for bpp for the others - although i am pretty used to the osbourne books from intermediate.
i would possibly be interested in your other books though, depending on how much you would want for them and how quick you want to get rid of them. of course the taxation book is better left till its needed.
thanks for offering them to me! ill wait to hear your price

Re:which text books??
Hi GG
All the books I have are BPP and to be honest even if you brought direct from BPP they are not likely to change very much, apart from to include the last set of exam papers, which you can download directly from the site.
Unit 11 - DFS, relates to international accounting standards, which is what is examined from this year.
Send me your e mail address, to discuss books further.

Re:which text books??
Osbourne books are also quite good. They do a tutorial and a workbook.
I used these and the revision notes from FTC, also the BPP passcards are good for revision.
Hope this helps

Re:which text books??
I swore by and really rate the BBP course companion. They are not as hefty as the other books and should be just right if your tutor is giving out good hand outs like ours did. We were directed to get the large combined kit for tax so we could do the questions from it.
I also used the revision CD for costing and found that excellent. Really got me through - and considering I had a baby half way through the course and still passed all first time - that is no mean feat!0 -
Re:which text books??
PM,
I hope your DFS books are staying on eBay as my colleague is interested in buying them.0 -
Re:which text books??
Hi Purplegirl
Yes they are still on and should end in 4 days. Tell your colleague that its is a complete set of study text, assessment kit and passcards cards.
Certainly help me get through the exams.
