Going Self Employed

I have decided that I wish to go self employed. What services are you allowed to offer your clients and do you have to become a member in practice before going self employed?

Re:Going Self Employed
You can offer any services that you feel competent in providing. Unless you register as a MIP then you cannot in any way allude to your AAT status.
If you hit the searc button at the top of this screen and type in self-employed you will find a wealth of help in terms of what you need to do, what systems to use and how to get your clients.
Good luck - I love being self-employed and wouldnt consider going back to working for anybody else - actually truth be told, I dont think anyone would have me

Re:Going Self Employed
Hi Everyone,
Does anybody know if you are allowed to use the AAT Logo in the Yellow Pages if you are only a registered MIP and not Licensed?0 -
Re:Going Self Employed
I think, but have never been sent details, that the AAT have a block ad in yellow pages that you can join. Actually never looked in yellow pages
Personally i think that it is a very expensive way of advertising with stack loads of competition....

Re:Going Self Employed
Hi Claudia,
I think your'e right about the block ad but they don't have one in for my area so that rules that one out. I agree about the expense of it but when you're on the look out for new business sometimes you have to invest a little don't you think? I've tried the church ad and the leaflet drop, oh yes and the newspaper ad! I picked up a couple of accounts from Y P last year which I still have so it has paid for itself. This is the biggest problem to new MIP's, finding clients. What else can we do? Is anybody out there a regular at their Branch network by the way?

Re:Going Self Employed
If you have tried cheaper options then go for it - I have never tried YP but found local mags have been good. Being sad
I actually worked out the other day where all my business had come from and 30% was from advertising and all the rest from word of mouth, which is the best form of advertising that there is, but it is tough getting those first few clients...
No I have never been to a branch meeting - always mean to, but never actually got there - where abouts in the country are you?

Re:Going Self Employed
Hi
I've asked the AAT about using their logo before. You have to put all their official wording with it, although a lot of people in my local area don't abide by the AAT rules on their adverts and stationery.
I advertised in the yellow pages last year, the only response I have had is people trying to sell me things. I've managed to get a free advert out of them this year as they made so many mistakes with my advert, but after that I won't be advertising again.

Re:Going Self Employed
I'm in Warwickshire, just outside Coventry. I've been meaning to get to a meeting for I don't know how long but not managed it yet. Just wondered what the score was really.

Re:Going Self Employed
Hi Andrea
AAT do have a block ad in the Coventry Yellow Pages (I am from Coventry). But only one person uses it at the moment(as far as I can tell from looking).
I have just been quoted £93.00 for a corporate ad, which I thought was quite good considering my other ad is costing me £170 p/a.
I've not been to a branch meeting either - I keep meaning to try to get to one but never quite manage it.

Re:Going Self Employed
Hi Michelle,
I've been on to the AAT and Yellow pages and I'm going ahead with the block ad as it's much cheaper as you pointed out. I did notice that one person is already in the block ad for our area, don't know how I missed that when I looked before!!
Perhaps we should both make the effort to attend the next branch meeting, what do you think?
