Your thoughts of mandatory CPD, now that the AAT will be making it mandatory from 2008...?

Do you think the AAT will update its CPD 'library' in light that most items there haven't been updated since 2004!?

Let's hope so. They also need to make it a little more interesting.

And the legal advice documents they have could be way off course by now!

    Re:Mandatory CPD

I agree, it is a little out of date!!
I'm quite happy and willing to do CPD but it's not always convenient or easy to get to branch events so an updated library on the website would be much appreciated :D
There is only so much you can do other than Inland Revenue courses.

To be perfectly honest I think at present the AAT should remove their 'CPD library' because lets be fair it is abit of a joke. Sorry AAT.

We need a "news" area, much like the Accounting Web.

    Hi

I agree with you dean. Its good idea to have such a resource centre, but money laundering infomation that is two years out of date is frankly worthless!

    Re:Mandatory CPD

A lot of people think that this mandatory CPD issue is a "waste of time". I disagree entirely with this.

Even though I am an AAT member, I won't be following their requirements as I have to follow ACCA' CPD route. It is important to realise that accountancy is a profession that constantly changes for example amendments to FRS's/IAS's etc. If a member of a professional body is not kept up to date with technical developments, then how can they profess to be technically competent - the answer is they can't.

By making CPD mandatory, the professional bodies concerned are merely ensuring that the members they admit are able to perform their everyday duties both competently and professionally. However, like mentioned above, this has to work both ways and the professional bodies (evidently the AAT) concerned MUST ensure that adequate resources are available (certainly on their website) to enable member's to fully comply with their demands.

"The AAT's Continuing Professional Development (CPD) policy is changing. AAT Council approved the revised policy after lengthy consultation with the membership."

Was that the postal questionnaire? I don't remember an especially lengthy consultation, but would be happy to read the results of it.

    Hi

I completed the questionaire and was telephoned by the company running the research. However, since the term 'professional' implying that one works, I thought it a tad ironic (or just plain not thought out) that they were only capable of contacting me during the day when it wouldnt have been exactly convinient to have such a conversation!

    Re:Mandatory CPD

I am more than happy to do CPD as there are lots of things that I don't know anything/much/enough (delete as appropriate) about.

However the AAT branch events are always on a Wednesday night which I can never do because of kids commitments.... any other night fine and dandy - why not different nights of the week? I have been to a couple of ACCA evening things which were good.

Also being stuck in Norfolk everything is sooooo far away.
