Hi all,

i'm starting intermediate on the 20th september as a day release at college and was wondering if i should attempt one of the exams in december to get one out of the way or will this be too much to do in such a short time?

any opinions appreciated.

Ang

    Re:exam in december??

The AAT will accept exam entries up to 15 Oct so there is no rush.

The paper you choose will cover the syllabus so you cannot expect to pass by knowing only half.

Speak to your college and see how they plan to teach each unit. Our college will cover quite a lot of ECR before the Dec exam, but not all of it. It will depend on how the college is fitting the reports and returns unit into the year.

I do not recommend students at our college to sit the papers early, mainly because it does not put them at an advantage. However, some of the private colleges have a more intensive approach which works very well.

    Re:exam in december??

I haven't done before, but I could if there were sufficient people interested.
I look for 8 to be viable, and will not go over 12. That way everyone can leave having understood the key issues.

I had a group of students from Cheshire at a revision weekend in Manchester at the end of April. If there were more from Cheshire I could look for somewhere accessible from North Wales as well.

I decided to sit for the June 06 PLB foundation and FRA Intermediate exam in April

My intention was to enrol for the Foundation just to do the Skills Test.

I passed both exams. Because the lecturer has expemted me from the foundation level, I am now doing the intermediate level with one less exam to do? It can be done I think

At my college we started Intermediate in September and took the FRA exam in December, all but one of us passed.

    Re:exam in december??

Since FRA is just an extension of many of the principles covered in Foundation, CJC has shown it's possible to sit the exam early after only three or so months. However, I wouldn't be so sure with ECR as, unless you already know about cost accounting, it's an entirely new and different ball game and may take longer to get your head around!

I'm sorry to be so blunt, but panicking about the exams before you've even started the course, is quite absurd. If you're doing day release, presumably at college, why on earth would you voluntarily choose to deviate from their carefully structured teaching plans and get all stressed about it before even starting the course?

Intermediate is a big step up from Foundation. I know my class couldn't have sat either exam in December after only starting in September, but that's to do with the way our course was planned and tutored. From a personal point of view, I think you should stick to a structured one year plan i.e. September to June with the Skills tests around March-April and the biggies in June. Take your time and don't get too ahead of yourself or you may stumble. Don't forget prudence and caution are fundamental accounting principles!!!

From reading some other topics on here, I find the way some have approached their course pretty disorganised -e.g. passing the main exams before even sitting the skills tests - and many are still 'flapping' around at the end when they should be sitting back, resting on their hard earned laurels and taking it easy for a while! I'm glad I did the course the way my college recommended as any other way would have probably been disastrous. Just my opinion.

    Re:exam in december??

I found FRA quite hard, but there's probably less new to actually learn than in ECR and it's a natural progression from the work done in Foundation. Having said that, I found ECR pretty easy but I'm not sure I could have taken the exam with just three months of study.

For me, it made perfect sense to do one exam in December and one in June, you're just focussing on one topic at a time and if you fail in December you've got another crack at it before the end of the academic year. This is even more the case at Technician where you could potentially end up doing five exams at the June sitting (ouch!).

I trust my tutors to know what they're about. They're not going to organise the course with a view to us sitting December exams if they don't think it's viable. I know they're very proud of their pass rates and aren't going to do anything that'll negatively impact on those. I'm sitting DFS this December which will mean an even tighter schedule but I still expect to pass as long as I put the work in.
