Hello,<BR><BR>I have recently become an AAT full member and I am now interested in becoming a tutor. I was just wondering if anyone else was thinking of pursuing a career in tutoring, and if so what steps have you taken to make the move?<BR><BR>If anyone knows of any colleges who are looking for tutors in the North West please email me on suzannelfenwick@hotmail.com<BR><BR>Thanks

    Hi Suzanne.

    You would need to have, or be working towards your PGCE. Once you qaulify as a teacher you would be awarded a 'Golden Hello', which is several thousand pounds.

    The www.tda.gov.uk website os for the rcruitment campaign for school teachers. AAT tutors work in FE colleges or private training centres.

    A PGCE is only open to graduates, which means having a degree. They may recognise other qualifcations for entry but you could also do a Cert Ed or similar. Also, you would need to take the assesor awards which you would need before you could sign off NVQ evidence as complete. If you were to et a job as a tutor, training towards relevant qualifcations may be offered with the job.

    Hi

    As from Jan 2000 all tutors who work in FE are required to take a teaching qualification if they don't already have one as well as being suitably qualified or having a good working knowledge of the area they wish to teach in. Neil is right most employers in this sector will offer you teacher training if not qualified.
    Having worked in further and adult education before I can say it was a most rewarding job however be prepared for long hours - marking and preparing for lectures etc - the teaching is the easy part. No I did not teach AAT I taught Maths and English to ex-offenders.

    I was thinking where i would go after completing this course, and i would also like to become a tutor/teacher in the profession, but i have no a-levels, would this stop me?? I have 10 GCSE's at grades A-C and a GNVQ in ICT. Then i will obviously have my AAT qualification also.

    Is it still possible for me to take the Teacher Training qualification??

    Hi Sam,

    This shouldn't stop you from becoming a tutor. Employers don't just look at academic qualifications they do look at your expereince both work related and life in general. Anyone can teach especially when the syllabus is laid before you and the text books are good, but personally I think it is the way you can show enthusiasm for your subject and engage your students into wanting to learn the subject matter which counts for just as much. Bums on seats is one thing but keeping them there is another.

    Thanks, I think i will have the experience they may ask for as i started as an accounts junior last year at my work and have been promoted to accounts and admin manager, i basically run the accounts department on my own and it will be my second year here in june, i hope they look past me not having any a levels.

    Hi Sam

    They should do, all you can do is stress you are keen to complete your teacher training course. If you can also keep your CPD up to date this will help too. It shows your are keeping up with the changes within your profession as well as howing off your capability to study.

    Thank you for your responses. I live in Stockport, Manchester.
    I am now considering doing some voluntary work as a lecturer at a local college in order to gain some practical experience.

    Last week on the jobcentreplus website was a vacancy for an AAT tutor in Didsbury asking for either a teaching qualification or an nvq level 4 in a relevant subject.
    See their job Ref: DIF/22176 for details if your interested, it's £19.75 per hour, not bad :D
    I couldn't do it myself I'm a shy soul.

    Hi

    I've just been given my first lecturers position at my local college teaching the foundation group 3 hours a week. I'm so looking forward to it, but on the other hand I am so nervous. I am going in to college on Monday to have a meeting with the course leader to get my scheme of work so that I can start my lesson plans. Wish me luck..
