Hi I was wondering if there is anyone that can help me.
I have just started my AAT foundation, but I am struggling finding my first job in accounts. Does anyone have some advice to help.
Many Thanks
Mark

Re:AAT foundation
I'm in the same bost. I have posted my CV with a covering letter to local accountant firms. And I am applying for any jobs that come up as well.0 -
Re:AAT foundation
Just send applications to EVERYONE. Maybe do some temp or voluntary work to get some experience? Make sure you're CV and covering letter are up to scratch - get someone to proof read them.
Can't think of much else you can do.
All the best

Re:AAT foundation
Hi
Have you registered with an accountancy employment agency? Try that and get them to put your forward for purchase ledger jobs and things like that so that you can gain your experience and move up the ladder. Hope this helps0 -
Re:AAT foundation
Hi, I am a business and finance manager for a relativley large company and I appreciate how difficut it is to gain employment in a field where you have no experience. If you are a school leaver you can obtain a modern apprenticeship scheme or alternativley if you are not currently in employment why not write to people like myself and ask if they can offer you a 2 or 3 month placement (you would not expect to get paid!) in oder to gain experience - if you make a good enough impression you might get a job and if not you have experience and a reference!!!!0 -
Re:AAT foundation
Hi
I fell into accounting backwards. I trained as a theatre designer, but when I left my first job after just 4 months I registered with an agency. The first job from the agency was covering maternity leave in a purchase ledger department. I said that I was good on computers and a fast learner and they placed with the company. After about 4 months of a 6 month contract I had picked up purchase ledger so well, that they sacked another member of staff and made me permanent. Then they trained me in sales ledger.
So I guess what I am saying is, register with all the temping agencies. You never know what will happen. If you don't get a permanent job that way at least you should get plenty of experience. Good luck

So, Speegs !!!!
It was YOU!!
Just Joking
But you're right - Agencies get paid for finding you work so they'll bust a gut to get you work.0 -
Re:AAT foundation
My partner is in similar situation, having completed her Foundation level ( just her portfolio to tidy up) she now finds herself lacking the experience that so many employers want.
My advice would be similar to the above, I would just add that voluntary could get you that all important experience. My partner does two half days a week at a credit union while holding down her part-time job as well.
She has told me its much like a banking enviroment, but they are giving her experience in the office doing the accounts work as well.
This is the website she applied at.

Re:AAT foundation
Make sure that if you do get a job with an agency that it's the right job for you. Because they get paid commission they may just bung you in any old job.

Hmm, Yeah -great point Gem, I didn't explain that in my post - so brush up on your Interview Skills too and make sure you ask the questions as well as answering them.
