Discounts for client introductions?

I've been offering my clients £10 off their bill for every new client they introduce to me, but I was reading the AAT's ethical guidelines the other day and it seems that that's not allowed :? anyone know whether i've misunderstood the guidelines and if not, why is this a 'bad' thing to do?
I've phoned the AAT to clarify but no-one's got back to me yet.

Re:Discounts for client introductions?
The way I read it was it is allowed providing the person who has been referred to you is aware that a discount has been given to the person who referred them (if that makes sense) :?
If you hear anything different please post as I was considering this myself.

I don't think you should need to give such a discount. If you have done a good job at a good price, then I usually find that you will get recommended anyway.0 -
Re:Discounts for client introductions?
You're probably right, but a year ago I was getting swamped with those calls begging me to advertise in a diary / newspaper / website and I decided that instead of paying them for new business I'd rather pay someone I actually cared about, ie my clients! So with each tax return I did last year I put at the end of the accompanying letter a paragraph along the lines of 'Providing your circumstances remain unchanged, I am providing a quote of £xxx to complete your 2005/06 tax return. This amount will be reduced by £10 for each new client introduced to me'
So I don't now want to have to go back and tell them that that doesn't stand any more!
I'll probably take it off future letters though.

the AAT have returned my call and yes michelle, you're spot on there - so long as the new client is aware of the introduction discount given to the original client then you're alright.
If I hadn't gone into blind panic after reading the first part of the guideline I probably would have realised that that was the case to start with!0 -

Thought that was the case but maybe not a good idea then.
I was considering it for the same reasons you were Jodie.
