Hi
I'm starting to feel disheartened about securing a paid role and would appreciate feedback from other people.
I've registered for the technician level at my local college however I am unsure about whether to go ahead and pay for the course myself as I have been unable to find a paid accounts role. If I do decide to go ahead I will need to let them know soon. I have recently taken on some voluntary work helping with the bookeeping for a charity and I am hoping that may help my application for jobs.
I was registered with two agencies though I nolonger ring them and vise versa as I decided that one week here and there wasnt what I was looking for.

Re:technician level and working!
i know how despondent this can make you feel. agencies can be so frustrating. what part of the country are you in? as i know a good agency in the kent area. have you looked at the reed.co.uk website? this has all kinds of accounts jobs listed with agencies and employers direct. i would personally carry on with your studies, it has got to be a positive addition to your cv.0 -
Re:technician level and working!
Hi,
I paid for both Intermediate & Technician myself. It is worth it! With agencies the thing that you need to remember is that they have hundreds of clients and you only have yourself to look after! I know it is a pain in the back side but you need to continually pester them, as the only tool they have is that when they enter a new job onto their systems if you haven't put in your resume that you have done, for example reconciliations then your name wont come up, also if you are currently working your chances are even less - stupid I know
So the websites that I used are
www.monster.co.uk
www.totaljobs.co.uk
www.reed.co.uk
www.hays.co.uk
Register for these & request daily alerts, but also look on them everyday and if you can tick the boxes on 70% of the job on offer put yourself forward. Ring and talk to your consultant every couple of days, you have to just keep pestering them and then they will start to remember you when a new job comes up, and you will be at the top of the list to call.
Good Luck & Don't give up

Re:technician level and working!
I get funding for my aat and i got my job through an agency. I would recommend going through the agencies, just let them know that you do not want to temp, i did this and on the two occasions that i used the agencies (both times i was found jobs through Reed) i found jobs with-in two weeks, you do need to keep regular contact, but it is worth it. They will find you something!!!0 -

Hello
Thankyou everyone. I live in the Midlands. Thanks for the insights into the workings of the recruiting consultant I think it helps when applying for jobs to know that you are being put forward for some of those jobs.
Thankyou so much for taking an interest all the best

Re:technician level and working!
Hi
With reference to College fees, i applied for a learner Support grant, from the student services at colleges, which paid for all but £10 of the Course fee and £40 towards the exam costs.
This depends on your earnings, so Take a copy of your P60 with you when enrolling.
However different colleges and different Local Goverments might have different policys

Re:technician level and working!
Hi, I am in the Midlands too. I had my foundation and intermediate paid for by work and then I changed jobs. My new job didn't work out, so I had to look for work.
I ended up getting a temp job, which got extended from 4 weeks to indefinite. In the mean time, I paid for Technician myself (I don't qualify for funding as I am married) as I was taken on a 6-month contract.
Finally I got made permanent and they back-paid for my course as my contracted work is considered part of the permenent contract.
I did this through Badenoch and Clark in Coventry.
I don't know if I am lucky, but I have only ever temped twice and both ended up as permanent jobs.0 -
Re:technician level and working!
I also got my accounts role through Badenoch & Clark but in London.
My previous role was also through an agency although not B&C.
I think agencies are always a good starting point. A point to remember though is that although you are after a permanent full time position, it's always a good idea to let the agency know that you are happy to temp if a position comes up.
This way not only will you be building up your CV & skills but you are also earning plus you never know the position may turn into a permanent role

Re:technician level and working!
I think that agencies are a waste of time. They want to get you into a job-no matter if its actually like what you asked for- just so they can earn their commission. One time, I went to a job about 1/2 hr away from where i live and the interview went really well. Then at the end I mentioned the fact that i go to college to study AAT on day release and she just stood up and said "Gods Sake, I told the agency no students this time". Until this, it was going really well. The advice I can offer is do what I did: Write up your CV and a covering letter and send it off by going throught the yellow pages to any company small or large. And go on the Jobcentre website every day to see if there have been any new ones added. If you keep going to interviews and dont get a job, then dont get too down as it will show through next time you go for an interview. Also get a paper every week and answer the ad even if some aspects of it you dont like the sound of.

Re:technician level and working!
I agree with you, agencies are rubbish although I have got all my jobs through agencies. They keep offering roles that I have done before and not ones that I want to do. They seem to lack the knowledge in accounts and all they want are numbers in their books and commission! Im now looking through website some good ones are : gaapweb, cityjobs and london jobs. If anyone knows better sites or agencies let me knw. This site is now becoming more of a jobsite than a website!0 -
Re:technician level and working!
take whatever crap job the agency gives you and then keep on looking you never know the crap job they give you, you may be able to work your way up etc0
