Hi,

I am just starting out as a MIP working from home. What programme would you recommand to use. I have set up some templates on Excel but I have heard that Quickbooks is a good programme.
I am used to using Sage. Any advice would be great.

I think it also depends on what your clients are using? Some prefer Quickbooks because it is simpler to work!

I like both programs, I use both depending on clients needs at the moment.

However I find Quickbooks easier for clients to use and price and the technical swing it for me.

Had I had not as many problems with Sage I would have stuck with it.

I work in practice but we have recently inherited a very high-turnover client who insists on Quicbooks, thought I am more Sage orientated.

Over the last few weeks I have become very used to quickbooks, but, overall I think Sage is the better (and more user-friendly).

Michelle - do you find the telephone technical support lines good for QB. I've only tried their tech support line once, and they didn't really understand my question. I came away with the impression that QB counldn't do what i wanted it to do!

    Hi Sheelagh

I have always found them to be most helpful on the odd occasion I have had to phone them. I have also used their online support which is very good. My version of quickbooks also has a built in help which I found excellent when I first started using it, as with most software programs QB has it's quirks.

    Re:Quickbooks

    Hi,
I used Quickbooks for a couple of clients for a while in my last job, after using Quicken for years for keeping the local church books.(And thinking it was brilliant) I remember having trouble with QB picking up the VAT on certain transactions and I didn't like the way transactions were automatically posted as soon as you hit enter and promptly disappeared from the screen. It was too easy to post into the wrong year, although there is a way round this, by using a password. Sorry forget exactly how.
Lets just say I was glad when my boss persuaded one client to switch to Sage.
I haven't had too much trouble contacting Sage - although it does takes ages to get past the awful music and their definition of "easy listening" differs to mine. I usual put the phone onto speaker so at least I can get on with something else!
The again, I'm not paying the phone bill :)

I think things have improved alot especially with the more recent versions. I have never had a problem posting VAT, I find that element works in the same way Sage.
You can also set QB up to preview the transactions prior to posting in the same way as sage works.

I think Sage has become too complacent recently and I find their support pretty abismal, particularly when their charges are high.
Or is it I am expecting too much in the way of quality of service.
