I am slowly, and painfully, working through Unit 22 and have come to Task 3.1 which suggests, if your organisation has no specific policy in place, relating to managing your own work area, to suggest an alternative, eg 'Clear desk policy'. Are there a number of alternatives to choose or do I just go with the answer they have given me. I have painfully read the whole chapter (3) through without success. Any wisdom to share?

i would image it is more or less common sense.
a desk should be kept free of litter, etc.
no employer wants to see a desk full of paperwork. it need to be neatly organised. by being neat and tidy in our work space, it should make our work easier as there is nothing worse than going through loads of papers just left on the desk in several heaps trying to find one letter for example. Also it does not give the correct company image to customers.

Then perhaps no-one should look at my desk  I've just had to phone the landline from my mobile to try and find the phone

Now that's appalling Claudia! Phoning your mobile from your landline, fair enough, I can understand that!

I'm terrible too. I tend to write everything on the backs of envelopes and then either lose or shred them without thinking! I tried post it notes but lost them too. My office is a tip, full of half started projects - or half completed ones, depending on your viewpoint. I even have to have two hands free phone handsets 'cos I'll inevitably lose one throughout the day at some point. My disorganisation is a running joke between me and my directors but fortunately I am very good at what I do!!!

I follow the out of sight, out of mind principle. If I can't see it, then I don't mind, so therefore I make sure I have plenty of drawer space in my offices!

It was suggested by our course tutor that we included a before and after photo proving that we organise our desk space. This could also embarass you into getting it sorted. My office space in my home, requires tidying up on a regular basis. My outside work space is kept much tidier. Pics may help you.

Rob, I've had the same problem so I now try to keep messages on outlook express. I automatically log into this wherever i work. Appointments pop up to remind me of things to do, time to go home as i leave at 2.45, etc. try it and see if it helps. It helps me provided i remember to log into it
