What do you charge?!

I'm fully qualified AAT and I've just started to offer my services as a bookkeeper, doing basic accounts and tax returns for sole traders etc.
The thing is, I'm not sure what I should be charging for my services? Can any of you self employed people out there let me know how you form the basis of what you charge ie. do you price each job or charge by the hour, and what hourly rate you consider reasonable?
I was thinking around £25 per hour? Is that too high?
Thanks. 8)

Re:What do you charge?!
Hi there
Whereabouts in the country are you - price will vary greatly depending on whether you are in central London or deepest Scotland, Wales, Cornwall etc say.
Give us a clue!

Re:What do you charge?!
Thanks, but presumably the rate should vary with the complexity of the work?
I've been asked to produce tax returns for the last three years, for which I need to produce the accounts in the first place. Basically, there are no records to date - just a shoe box full of bits of paper!!

Re:What do you charge?!
WhatI charge depends on lots of factors including complexity; whether or not I want/need that work
, my mood!!!!, gut feeling and what the previous person charged - though presumably not appropriate in your case.
For a bag full of receipts to full P&L, B/S and tax return I would say no less than £400 per annum.
Have you warned them that there will be horrific penalties and interest for three years tax returns  and check that they have the means to pay, or you might end up out of pocket as well.

Re:What do you charge?!
Yeah, it's okay as far as the IR are concerned - it's complicated, but we have until end November to file the first tax return. :?

Re:What do you charge?!
I am in Norfolk and charge £20 per hour, but am looking at putting up my rate. I have never had anyone complain. However, I do charge different rates for Tax Returns etc, depending on the work involved.0 -
