How often do people use this service and how useful do you find it?

I have probably used it four or five times over the past year. Always for VAT matters. The staff are always able to quickly find the relevant legislation and email me the extracts relating to my query. Saves a lot of time searching through Tolleys manuals.

The only downside I have found is that the operators have not necessarily had a background in general practice and therefore are not always able to interpret the legislation into a practical scenario. I guess that's where this forum helps!

What are your experiences?

I've used it probably about 6 or 7 times in the past year - most times it was fine, but one of the ladies in particular answered my question so fast & with so much jargon that I couldn't understand her - she then got really patronising when I asked her to repeat what she'd said!
I think I ended up phoning back a few days later with a different question & spoke to someone else so I asked him the original question again and got a much more sensible answer.

I've used them a couple of times over the past year for VAT matters and a corp tax question. I couldn't fault the service when dealing with the VAT questions and found the service to be very good.

But they couldn't help at all with the corp tax / capital allowances question so I ended up ringing HMRC and still haven't got a definitive answer!!!

Isn't it the card I got sent and have put somewhere really safe :D actually I know exactly where it is, as (not being pious or anything) I spent most of Friday tidying up my desk and office, paying bills and doing my filing.

Yes it is the card, which I have lost but luckily I wrote down the number and code we use so I can still access them.

Dean my situation is tricky - a ltd company of mine rents out storage space, those big moveable containers a bit like the ones you would find on cargo ships which aren't often moved. Customs are arguing vat should be charged on the rental of the containers as they are moveable. However IR say the containers are fixed and classed as a building so can't claim capital allowances (first year of trade for the company), also if they were fixed buildings customs say VAT would NOT be charged.

See what I mean both departments are arguing they are right so I don't know what to do. I am having to seek specialist advice which is going to cost a small fortune as even the accountants I work alongside have looked into this and can't come up with an answer!!
If it means saving the client a lot in corp tax (approx £20K) it will be worth it.

Isn't that a wonderful example of the unity between HMCE and the Inland Revenue!
