Tax Return - Mechanic

Hi

I am completing a Tax Return for someone that use to be a Mechanic, but is now a Self Employed builder.

When he was employed as a mechanic his tax code was increased from 489L to 499L as he had the additional £100 allowance for Mechanics, what I'm not sure of is how I show this £100 on the employment pages of his Tax Return, should it go into box 1.22 Other Benefits?

Sue

Box 1.22 will result in him paying additional tax on the £100. Should be in box 1.33.

Should you be completing his return or seeking professional advice??

Thanks I'd checked through HMRC Website as well.

I only complete Tax Returns up to review stage then pass them to a Chartered Accountant for finalising, I just wanted to try and get it correct before I passed it on.

    John

I've just noticed you are the same person that complained about people asking basic questions a couple of months ago, if you think this site is beneath you why bother logging on.

Not that I'm not grateful for any advice I get from this website, but if I had no knowledge on completing Tax Returns I would not have been aware that the benefit existed or that I would need to declare it on the return, my only problem was where it should go.

exactly - john, what's your story? Everyone else seems to get the gist of this forum - asking for advice when it's needed and helping out graciously when they know the answer. Is it really that hard??

Well said, in other words "If you haven't got anything decent to say, don't say anything at all"

    Re:Tax Return - Mechanic

My experience on these forums suggests that all those MIP's/bookkeepers/tax adviser people who log onto these forums (especially those on the members in practice forums) must produce work of the highest standard for which their clients can obviously place reliance on. Why do I say this and why have I got this opinion when I don't know them? Because they are not afraid to ask for help/advice when required - i.e. use the forums for the purpose for which they are intended.

If you ring the Inland Revenue for advice invariably they either pass you from one department to another or don't know the answer themselves.

People like John and his opinions above carry no weight at all on these forums and their opinions aren't really worth anything. As you've gathered, pompous, arrogant and downright rude people are not highly rated in my opinion.

My advice is to ask away no matter how stupid you think the questions are. It's better to ask and make sure than risk looking like a fool.

    Kind regards
    Steve

Thanks everyone for your support on John's comment.

I was concerned my comments back to him would make me look ungrateful and that no one would help me if I had any other questions, but it seems you all agree with me.

Just playing devil's advocate here, but could we have misunderstood John's comment?

Might it have been tinged with a note of concern for Sue, rather than a direct criticism?

When you read something in black and white it can be misunderstood.

Of course, I might be wrong!

I've also posted a question and been really upset by the apparent tone of one of the responses so I know how Sue felt. But I ignored it, safe in the knowledge that I have a 25+ year career to fall back on if I get kicked off the forum!

We have to remember that (not in Sue's case!) a forum member might only have become a student 'today' and they need help. It's impossible to assess someone's true level from just a few lines here.

John must be biting his tongue at the moment - and don't forget, he did answer the original question!

    Hi

The reason I had commented was because John had started a post in August complaining about the basic questions people asked on here, and naming people that had asked that, so yes although John answered my questions, it seems as though he only did it so he could pick fault at my question.

I have worked for Accountants that didnt even know the benefit existed, so I just felt that the fact I was aware of it and knew I had to declare it, showed that I knew what I was doing and John's comment that I should seek professional advice wasnt completely necessary.

I quite agree. Sometimes it seems that some members only reply to show how clever they are, not to help the original poster.
