Is it just me that takes longer than the 3 hours to complete these things or is the 3 hour target a bit difficult to reach?<BR><BR>Nick

    i've only done unit 1 doing unit 2 tonight (purchases) unit 1 (sales) was ok getting it done in the 3 hours but doing the practice papers for unit 2 i really struggled to get them done in the 3 hours time limit

    Hi Nick,<BR><BR>I have had to do my Skills test in a room at work with a 3 hour limit. My supervisor keeps coming in every 30 minutes and I was "searched" before doing it... lol. It's probably the way it should be done but I need about 3 days, not 3 hours. It takes me an age to get my head around things then the time whizzes by. Suffice to say, I failed Unit 1 & 3.......<BR><BR>

    Hi Nick<BR><BR>Did my unit 1 skills test yesterday, I tried to stick to the time scale, and must admit it did take me 3 hours to complete, but mainly because my mind went completely blank, and I had a bit of a panic attack! However I did pass it, but it has left me feeling a little concerned about how I will react in June.<BR><BR>Some people taking the paper took 4 1/2 hours hours to complete, so I wouldn't worry too much, there is a lot to remember, and it doesn't help that you have to keep going back over so many pages to collate the information, it just wouldn't be like that in a real situation.<BR><BR>Chat with you again soon!<BR><BR>Tracy<BR><BR>

    HELLO AS I SAID YESTERDAY I DONE UNIT 2 SKILLS TEST AND AGAIN IT TOOK THE 3 HOURS TO COMPLETE - DON'T THINK THEY ARE THAT STRICT REALLY AS SOME PEOPLE HAD THE HOURS AND ARE STILL GETTING TIME TO FINISHED IT ON THURSDAY. NOT SURE IF YOUR COLLEGE WORKS THE SAME WAY

    Well i did my my first PRACTICE skills test 2 weeks ago and that took me 5 hours!!!!! I have sent it off to my tutor and had no reply (no suprises there!) but he'd certainly not rushing to tell me i'm 100% ready to take the proper skills test, which WILL BE in a contolled environment at work, in a room with a supervisor = aagghhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh i'll NEVER do it in 3 hours!!!!<BR><BR>Sarah

    I hope this will make you feel better (d all the above) I looked at last years paper and quite frankly you would not believe how easy it was. I'm not saying that because I find Foundation easy - quite the opposite I have nearly quit 3 times due to the length of time to do the assesments and the homework - which you are all correct never takes 3 hours !!!!<BR><BR>However if you think about it you do 4 assesments that all take 3 hours - the exam in june is only 3 hours so they condense a lot of the stuff. i.e you don't have to fill in the day books but just transfer the figures to the main ledger accounts. Similarly they only give you 1 or 2 invoices 1 return and a couple of petty cash (my absolute least favourite that I just cannot get the hang of)<BR><BR>Apparently they always always always ask confidentiality questions - data protection style. But if you think about it logically they could only ask a minimum on each and also they have to get a trial balance in !<BR><BR>Hope this gives some piece of mind but believe me I know how stressy it is.<BR><BR>Blue Julie

    Hi<BR>I totally agree, i have just completed a skills test for unit 1, i have never been under so much pressure to do so much in 3 hours. I too did this under exam condition at work, not a problem but you are constantly worried about the time, why so many tasks???

    Did mine yesterday and it was a 4hr exam. It took me almost the full 4hrs. Should find out Thursday if I have passed.
    I froze when I got to the cash book and I am sure I got it wrong.

    Good God jr - you managed to resurrect a thread that had been dead for twenty months! How many pages did you have to go back to get to this one?!! Theoretically, the people who started this thread could even be on technician level now it's so old!!!

    But to my point and all the people currently doing foundation!

    I empathise with the original poster as I remember very well having what I thought was a nightmare for my first skills test at Foundation. But it turned out not so bad after all and I had worried for nothing. The skills tests at Foundation are always harder than the central - honestly, you won't believe - and I mean you really won't believe but it is true - how easy the central will be compared to the skills tests. It has a virtual 100% pass rate and you'll all be out in less than two out of the three allotted hours...

    Chin up - it all comes to you in the end!

    This thread just scared the XXXX out of me. I was reading it as it originated with Neogen and I hadn't chatted to him in ages, then I saw a reply by myself and had an awful de-je-vu moment, then I felt a bit confused, then I had to rub my eyes and think when the heck did I type that as I did that skills test ages ago, then all became clear!! Seems like years and years ago now (oh yes it was!).

    Our tutor has told us we must complete it in the 4 hours allocated. She showed us the sort of thing we would be doing and we all panicked. Although most of us have complained at the lack of explanation given by the tutor on how to do certain things. There is no time for us to say "can you repeat that cause we didn't quite get it".
    However, our health and safety tutors cheered us up by saying we have 4 weeks to complete the skills test for that part and can take it home to research the answers.

    We have just had our skills test simulation (practice one) and OMG !!! Im panicking like you wouldnt believe , i have a week to revise on EVERYTHING :(

    I really cant see me passing and im wondering what i have got myself in for , i was absoloutly stumped in class today and if it wasnt for the tutor running through it i wouldnt have known where to start let alone complete all the tasks :roll:

    Everybody in my class feels the same , the infomation we have been taught so far has been too thick and too fast and questions are always brushed away ...none of think we are anyway ready for this

    What would happen if the whole class failed :lol:

    Relax - Stop Panicking!

    IF you fail...

    You just keep retaking the new version until you pass...

    When you say 'everything' - do you mean everything for Unit 1 ie Sales-side of Double-entry? (as in NVQ)
    or do you mean all elements of Unit 31 (for Diploma)?

    I'm also a little puzzled as to why you are panicking. (ie take a step back, assess situation, etc - blindly reacting leaves you vulnerable to people winding you up or manipulating you. And, You are DECIDING to panic...)

    I would see failure as a chance to face a whole new set of questions, thus broadening my understanding of the subject - which I feel would eventually make me a better Accountant... You may face unknowns in the future (with your clients, say) - how are you going to cope? See it as a game, rather than a form of 'torture'...

    Don't rely on your tutors - be prepared to learn the subject on your own, if necessary. Don't blame the 'less capable' tutors, and thus jeopardise your future... (Overcome obstacles, keep asking tutor, change tone of voice/method of querying with tutor, ask different tutor, class solidarity towards tutor...)

    Also, changing your attitude may make the subject MORE interesting, and thus easier to remember. Ask questions which go beyond what is actually necessary for the course!!! Don't just see it as the trauma of exams, tests, and all drudgery - it makes it MORE DIFFICULT TO LEARN! Be in a state of mind where it is fascinating, mesmerizing, and you feel an INNER URGE to find out more... If you're interested in the money - another motivation... (a little fickle, though.)

    Do you think it will be more interesting for you when you are actually IN the profession, than it is now? (!!!!) Also, this is the sort of thing you will do in the job, with deadlines. Here, you get the chance to play, experiment, make mistakes, in safety, without the penalties of being disciplined or sacked for messing it up! :idea:
    I would also put my failed Skills tests into the portfolio evidence for Unit 23(!)

    (Obviously, x5wrangler, blobbyh, columbia, et al, have already passed - so my comments are directed to the 3 'rookies', and other rookies who are likely to join, or merely read, this thread!!!)

    Don't be unfair on yourself Toadface, I'd say you're irritating now never mind in three years time! :lol:

    Just kidding. I'm now at technician level but occasionally browse the Foundation and Intermediate forums to lend my moral support where I can. And I know the people on here are worrying themselves sick for nothing...

    Foundation is easy and yes, it's easy for me to say that, but I am speaking from experience which is part of my point. When I was doing foundation I was the same as you are now. But YOU CAN ALL DO IT - NEVER GIVE UP!

    There are loads of other people here who can help you if you get stuck - use us...

    I had the same moment as my mate Columbia then and I thought someone had actually nicked my user name :shock: Anyway don't want to prolong my post but as Robert says, we are on Technician now, so what does that tell you? I would be lost without this discussion forum and I have made friends and more importantly made it to Technician! So I know exactly how you feel. I was dreadful at foundation and it took me 18 months to do it but I stuck with it and I have two exams myself in December. good luck to everyone taking theirs. :lol:

    Haha, you said Waffly which sounds like waffles, which are my favourites and I've not had them for ages......! Anyway, to summarize, (how I see it but it doesn't mean everyone will see it this way)
    1. Ask yourself "WHY" are you doing this qualification?
    2. What do you want to do when you get your qualification?
    3. Are you prepared to put the work in, it won't come to you on a plate?
    4. Can you handle the hard reality that not everyone will offer the fluffy blanket, advice may come across in a manner you don't want to hear?
    5. Get on this forum, enjoy it, make friends and realise you are all in the same boat.
    6. Finally, be proud of yourself and what you are doing, everyone on the site should feel like that and everyone on this site should be proud of everyone else too.

    Cheers! Definitely agree with you re exams - one of the best resources, then there's all the old threads, so you don't need to start a new one! (...)
    Feel pretty confident about bookkeeping, just getting a bit more general knowledge for the other questions. The weak bit for double entry is journals, but i've had a look at CJC's notes, and had a play. So, I think I should be okay. Would like to aim for FRA for next June. Get a bit of head start, etc. :D

    Where are you heading when you pass? ACCA or ICAEW, or one of others, or are you going to take a well-earned break? :D:lol: It's a bit far ahead for me at moment, so I'm not sure where to aim for. Just get more info over time...

    PLB eh? I struggled with Foundation and did my exam in 1 hour 15 mins and passed it. Do some practice exams, they are a real help. I am doing PEV & PCR in december, I will then do DFS in June next year and hopefully wrap it all up by time the results come up in August 07. Yippee! I can then reclaim my evenings and weekends.

    I failed my skills test but I am confident I will pass the re-sit in 4wks. I did however write the best letter out of the class in the exam.

    That's all you need jr, some confidence and if you wrote the best letter in the class then good for you. Take that positive away with you. You should have had some feedback on the bits you didn't do so well on, so just concentrate on them more. :D

    Skills Tests (Foundation Unit 1)

    Use Highlighter pen.
    Are Purchase Orders signed by representative of Purchasing Company?
    Are Sales Orders (ie telephone orders, etc) signed by authorized person at 'your' company? (eg Sales Manager)
    Are Delivery Notes signed for receipt of goods?
    Does Quantity match between the order and the delivery note?
    Does each Item Code actually exist?
    Does it match the original Order? If so, write the UnitCost on the Purchase/Sales Order - you'll need it when preparing the Invoices.
    Does the Purchasing Company have a balance close to, or exceeding, their Credit Limit?
    Write the Purchasing Company's Trade Discount % in pencil on the Delivery Note - saves rummaging through paperwork later...
    If Settlement Discount % is NOT specified on the Invoice, then re-read the introduction to the simulation and ensure that you understand the rules. Some have policy of only granting Discounts if the Purchasing Company 'requests' it!
    If calculate Settlement/Cash Discount, write the £value in pencil on the Invoice - you may need to add all of them together later!
    When posting to accounts - don't forget to include the opening balance for Sales Ledger Control Account - 'balance b/f'. (Total the opening balances for each debtor, or the total for each outstanding/recorded invoice on their accounts...)[Edit, not sure about this point. Only do it if looks like needs doing..]
    Entries to Discount Allowed should ONLY occur for the tasks where you have received payment!
