hello
is it me or is there a lot of paperwork eg assessment plans, portfolio etc that is required before you even start to get to grips with the content of the course.
i only started the course at end of oct but it took me many hours to read through all the paperwork and suss out what is what before i even opened the tutorial book. Please one-one tell me they thing the same or am i just out of touch with this learning lark.

You are proving your skills at communication skills, plus accountancy, plus self-appraisal, etc.
(Some of which will eventually tie in with Continuing Professional Development...)

Re:Distance Learner - Foundation
I agree with you ALN - I started the NVQ a couple of months ago and there is a ridiculous amount of paperwork involved!
I think I made the same mistake as you and thought it all had to be produced before starting the course and spent a lot of time on it. I was trying to be methodical and start at the beginning and work my way though. However, when I looked at it again, I saw that a lot of the stuff wasn't essential for the start of the course and could be collected throughout.
I have since changed over to the Diploma Pathway so everything I did for NVQ is irrelevant now - Diploma uses skills tests etc rather than all the paperwork that the NVQ involves.
It's all down to choice - I prefer the Diploma but Toadface has moved on amazingly fast and successfully on the NVQ.
With regard to your last comment, I am out of touch with this learning game too and fitting in full time work and a family. I have not got very far with my course as I'm taking it slowly, so we are probably at similar levels. Keep in touch either on this thread or join the "Study Buddy" thread that Toadface and I chat in, and we can all encourage and help each other.
Good luck..... and don't panic Captain Mainwaring (are you too young to recognise that phrase)???

Re:Distance Learner - Foundation
hi Bagpuss1
thanks for your advice and encouragement.
i too work full-time and have other committments which i am not prepared to give up. maybe this is not for me.
i have not thought about changing over to diploma. my work are paying for the course.
like you i like to work in a methodical way, which i tried to do with this course but you seem to jump from unit 23 back to uni21 then assignment for another unit then skills test for a different unit.... what a muddle, but i am glad it is not just me and being out of touch.
anyway it is not life threatening (as my partner keeps telling me) and i will do it in my own time.
i totally feel like a kid back at school and think i will be told off it not handed in homework......
thanks again and i will keep in touch....i need to

Hiya!
You sound just like me!! I was all ready to give up and thought I wasn't up to the course but was encouraged to carry on. I still doubt myself but it has helped that I have accepted that I can only do this at my own speed
Are you going to college or doing a correspondence course - mine's correspondence through Premier Training?
You should join our Study Buddy thread - there's 4 of us (me, Toadface, Katie and Rae) - and we all support and encourage each other.
Come and join us - you'll love it and you are guaranteed to smile/laugh which lifts the mood when you are studying hard?
Where do you live - they are all northerners
- I'm from Hampshire
Keep going and keep smiling :P0 -

Re:Distance Learner - Foundation
hi
yes correspondence via Amersham College, i live in Aylesbury, Bucks.
just been looking at the Diploma option.....looking good. Although i have just spent my lunch break gathering the evidence needed for the porfolio.
i already work in accounts "Credit Controller" but as everything is computerised it seems harder to get around doing the task manually.
i will log onto the study buddy thread.....0 -

Re:Distance Learner - Foundation
Hi Anita
I've used Sage for 4+ years too so I understand what you mean - it's hard to go back to manual bookkeeping.
Will you employer let you change to Diploma if that's what you decide?
Paul, my tutor at Premier Training was really supportive and it only cost me £40 extra - this was for the books for Unit31
Good luck in whatever you decide

Re:Distance Learner - Foundation
hi Bagpuss1
i have emailed my tutor and AAT ref changing to the Diploma but nothing has come back as yet.
only £40 extra - that is good then. i assume you can use the nvq books for units 1 - 4 and units 21-23 for the diploma course.
was it an easy switch or did you have to try and catch up.
are you happy with the switch
have a good week

Re:Distance Learner - Foundation
Hi Anita!
Yes I am using the same books and carrying on with the same work in the same way. None of my work has been wasted. I think with Diploma you just do things in a different order - only Units 1-3 and Unit 31 for the 1st level. You go back to Unit 4 in the next level!
I am very happy with the switch and feel the Diploma suits my style of learning better - I have done an NVQ before and didn't enjoy it (but that is just My opinion - it suits other people)
As I said, my tutor was very kind and told me he had changed me to the the Diploma using the cheapest route possible (ie just the additional books) - I hope your tutor is as kind.
It was very easy to switch - My tutor did it all really. All I had to do was follow the link on this website just to inform the AAT that I had switched - it took 2 minutes!
How are you getting on - at which stage are you now?
Feel free to PM me at any time if you'd prefer to discuss the course in a less public manner (my name's Anna by the way)
Speak soon and keep up the good work

Re:Distance Learner - Foundation
Hi Anna
excuse my ignorance what is PM - and for you others who read this - don't laugh.
I am still awaiting for my tutor (emailed her last wed) and other correspondence to get back to me regarding the possibility of switching to Diploma.. i am getting anxious now
it is bad i know but i have only read and done student activities on unit 1 and unit 21.....god i feel like i have been doing it for years  it took me days and days to grasp the portfolio and in what order i should be doing things. i feel so dumb at times.
thanks for your advice and i will definately keep in touch.
just had a nice Costa coffee for lunch so i had best get back to work.0 -

Re:Distance Learner - Foundation
Hi Anita!
You are not dumb at all - I have all the same feelings as you - everyone else seems so motivated and focused and able don't they??! We are just going at a slower pace - there is nothing wrong with that at all - we all have the same aim but it is not a race
I am still on Unit 1 by the way so as I said before, we are at about the same level
Sorry re saying PM - when it was 1st said to me I didn't click straight away what it was!!
Life is full of abbreviations isn't it and it's all so confusing!! Just on this website you get alot of AAT....ACCA.....CIMA.......IAC.....PLB...... what ever happened to words??!!
It's a huge shame that your tutor hasn't got back to you - can you ring her or is it only email contact?
Keep smiling, Anita - we're all here for you
