I have been asked to prepare the accounts for an acquaintance who for the last year has worked as self employed, to submit his tax return. I want to supply the information in a professional format, can anyone assist please, this will be my first client so I don't want to look like an amateur.

Are you registered as a member in practice and do you have experience of doing tax returns?

    Just interested

I've just checked the members on practice rules and as I will not received any payment for this at present so beleive at present I don't need to register. My experience at present is limited to that acquired during Technician stage.

As far as I can gather he is just going to provide me with bank statements, receipts etc for the past year. As I'm a little nervous, I don't want to go further indepth than is necessary, I have no problem with setting up accounts, but am not sure to what level I need to go in this case to show the end result.

The reason I asked is that when I spoke to AAT about signing some accounts with MAAT (I'm not a member in practice) and it was for free (I was just confirming some charity accounts) I was strongly advised to make sure I had some kind of indemnity insurance! Even though it's for a friend - it may be worth it
