Can any explain to me the answer to Task 1.2 b revised production budget?

Sigmas (320x1400/2000) = 224 x 7 = 1568
Thetas (320x600/2000) = 96 x 4 = 384

Where does the 2000 come from?

Thanks,
Fiona

I read your question without my answer to hand.

I suspect my answer is a little different but I will try explain what is happening here.

320 more hours of overtime would be needed to enable all the production to be made, the 9,555 Sigmas and 11,760 Thetas in the original order and the 1,400 Ss and 600 Ts in the Chris Ringer extra order.

So there is labour time constraint. You are then expected to divide this 320 hrs shortage between the 2 products. The way the examiner has done it has been on the basis of the proportion of the total extra products ordered. 1,400 Sigmas + 600 Thetas = 2,000 extra products. So 1400/2000 x 320 hrs gives the number of Sigma orders that will not be produced and 600/2000 x 320 hrs gives the number of Theta orders that will not be produced.

I have my answer to the first section on my computer at work and can send you this when I am in next Tuesday. I may have used a different but equally appropriate method of deciding which of the extra order to produce. If you think this might be worth looking at and that you wouldn't be confused by it, you are welcome to a copy

    Thank you very much Sandy.

I could not find that 2000! (Silly me!)

I did pass this exam, however I just made an extra 210 Sigmas with the 30 extra hours available (30 hours x 7 Sigmas)and added them to the original production budget.

But I still like to see where I went wrong (sad, I know!)

I would appreciate it, if you could email me a copy of your answers.

I have emailed you separately with this request.

    Thanks again,

    Fiona

I will look at this before I send it to you, but I think you are right.
It appears that there is no prescribed use for the 30 hours, so you can apply your own discretion.

This can scare some students if they only look at Alan cull's answer and assume that anything different must be wrong.

In case anyone else reads this and wonders what you should do at work, the normal answer is to try to satisfy the demand for which ever product has the greatest contribution per labour hour.

I'm in work tomorrow, and will reply to your email then

I had another look at this task on Friday.

I will put together a range of all equally appropriate uses of the 30 labour hours available.

Your point is good and I am surprised that there hasn't been more correspondence about the examiner's solution only showing one of the possibilities.

    Well done Fiona

    Gold Star

No one else has drawn attention to this to the best of my knowledge..... but mark my word, when the exams approach I am sure this question will become a hot topic on here.

Have a drink, you deserve one.

    Thanks, Sandy

Think I had one drink too many.....hic...

I know if I was sitting the exam in december and was looking back at past papers, this would really have confused me!

I'm sure you'll be on hand to answer any questions that are posed by fellow students.

Take care, and thanks again for all your help.

The revised production budget suggested answer is 9387 units of Sigma and 11976 units of Theta. I disagree with the logic of this as 9555 units Sigma and 11760 units Theta were the normal production requirements before the extra order. Surely normal production should be maintained first before considering any extra units. The revised budget (answer) gives a shortfall on normal Sigma production. I would have used the normal production figures and then calculated the extra production available using the surplus 30 hours. :?

    I agree with you

You have clearly gone back a long way to pick up a thread where the previous posting was 26 September.

I had expected a lot more discussion on the published answer.

Sorry for delay in response to this thread. I'm revising for this weeks exams and only just come across this question. I thought it was a stinker of a question and would be interested to know what percentage of candidates arrived at the same answer as the examiner.
