kerrarno, I am the same as you and studying with ftc, I phoned them about the Life Cycle costing because I thought it wasnt in the book. It is on page 284 chapter 10 and is one whole mighty small paragraph, blink and you miss it. I have the newest book for PEV/PCR. If you have this book it will take you all of 30 seconds to read all about it.

I found this paper absolutely solid!

I didn't put my pen down until 2 minutes to go!

I completely rushed the second memo.

I think I spent too much time on the first task.

Did nobody else think this was REALLY hard!?

    Re:PCR todays exam

So what did everyone say for

    internal and external analyses

    and

two other control techiniques other than flexed budgets
    ??

    and

when was product life cycle ever on this syllabus? We certainly haven't mentioned it in our lessons!
And I don't remember seeing it oin my book?!

I just discussed internal analyses - like do we have enough resources, and external - what is the economy doing and what will it do.
And the other two control factors! I couldn't think of ANY. In the end I said performance related pay and better forecasting of economic trend, to establish a better sales forecast, so as to control the selling price so that a profit was made at the amount that was going to be sold.

    -Clueless?!

    Re:PCR todays exam

Yes Kellytm, i think that is what i did- it seemed correct because when i compared teh actually to budgeted in my flexed budget it was similar- no massive differences so thought it looked ok. Was unaware this was called the high low method though!!! Im sure this has not been on any past exam papers- it always gave us some elements of cost didint it? e.g budgeted electricity has fixed cost of 20000, so then you can obviously work ou the variable. For the last memo- i couldnt think of anything and i was running out of time fas so i just put 2 methods that were stated in section one- internal/external analysis. Thought if i put something i pay pick up a mark. On my overal profit i got a variance of 110a but everybody seems to have got 10 so i must have gone wrong sumwhere- maybe typed in my calculator an extra zero or something. Oh well!!!

That's just rubbish, then. I've got the book from last year and there is over a page about it! We also briefly got taught about it last year, but that was well over a year ago and it hasn't come up before! I think I mentioned would it popular for long and would the material be durable!

I've already replied to this one, but as you couldn't work out stocks for period 5, if would seem rather obvious to do p1-4 (or is that just me?).

    Re:PCR todays exam

for 1.1a I worked out sales forecast for 2-5 as 1 was given but for the rest I did 1-4 as like you say you couldn't work out the closing stock for period 5. Period 5 was only in there to help you work out the closing stock for period 4. I did get this but understand it could have been a bit confusing!

no it was very obvious to me to! you couldnt work out the production of period 5 as you woldnt know the closing stock!

    Whittaker
I also had the same production figures. After that everything went haywire. I managed to make extra in period 2 and 3 and used up closing stock in period 1, but this still left me with a shortfall in perios 2. :?

    Re:PCR todays exam

I have taken this from my (un-finished)PCR answer.

I will have the whole of my answer available later in the week and will put a thread on this website to say so.

I hope this is some help to readers. It is my understanding of what the question has asked for.
    Task 1.2 (c) Memo
To: The Board of Directors Date: December 7th 2006
    From: Sandy Hood

Reducing the production of stocks of Keyfits

    (i) The implications
The limit on the material available in each of the periods has led to a revision in the production budget. Rathert than have 18,000 units in stock at the end of period 1, this budget shows only 8,200. In the subsequent periods this will also be lower than originally budgeted.

Because of the lower production, labour costs of almost ร‚ยฃ384,000 will also be saved.
Lower stocks will require less storage space and lower financing costs.
Keyfits are new products and our forecast sales may have been based on market research.
However, the likely accuracy must be questioned. The original production budget built in sufficient stocks to deal with demand outstripping the forecast. We will now have much less of a cushion.

(ii) Techniques useful when forecasting sales
The examiner only asked for 2 of these 3 Strategic Considerations show us where the senior management are planning to take
the company. If Keyfits are seen as a product that will spearhead Kando moving into
a new market which will then become a sourse of revenue for other products that is
likely to mean that sales are more likely to be supported by extensive advertising and
promotion to achieve this. When we know this, we know that forecast sales need to
have built in such extra support over and above any survey results.
External Analysis Most business school courses incorporate analysis of the
various external environments affecting business. These can include the political or
legal influences. In the security industry, one recent law has been that bouncers (or door attendants) are licenced. If the lay required everyone with a licence to carry a Keyfit, this would be very important to any budget.

Other external environments include: sociological, economic and technological. Changes in any should be recognised in any good sales forecasting.

Internal Analysis The business needs to be well aware of its own strengths
and weaknesses. We expect that three hours are sufficient for our workforce to make one Keyfit. But that may be because they are very good at that type of work. If the production level shot up beyond the number our current workforce are capable of producing then new staff may be much slower as they will need the necessary training.

When looking at sales forecasting we need to be very much aware of our capabilities.
Related to this we also need to be aware when large numbers of staff are likely to leave and the need to have profficient replacements when that happens.

(iii) Factors to take into account when considering the life-cycle of the Keyfit
1 Products in the security industry are likely to have short life cycles as criminals may try to
overcome the value in one way or another. This is likely to mean that Kando will need to
start developing newer improved Keyfit products as the criminals find ways around the
current one. This will lead to fairly rapid introductory phases and short periods of maturity
before the next product then appears and takes over.
2 As stocks will become obsolete when the Keyfit is superseeded, the point when the new products start to appear ought to be a signal to stop producing for stock

    ARE YOU JOKING??????????????????

good god i thought it was awful, the flexed budget was ok till it asked for variable elements, we hardly got taught a thing on high/low method, i think aat try to cram too much stuff into a short space of learning time (if studying at college)if you go to college on a monday its worse with the bank holidays being discounted!

    Re:PCR todays exam

What aspect did you think was a joke?

How many bank holidays did you have prior to the exam in December?

I run this course in 3 modes
      11 3 hour classes
      4 whole days
      1 day revision classes

The revision classes cover those topics the class find most troublesome, but the other courses cover the syllabus well.

my response was to kay, i thought it was an awful paper,

you may be able run this module in that short space of time, i myself as do most fellow students on my course have homes, jobs, maybe 2 jobs and kids to look after, i am not looking for sympathy i am merely stating my opinion as per freedom of speech to that exam.

My college course is once a week alongside other modules, not that one alone. I think for future reference it is best not to assume everybody manages their time just purely for college.

    Hi

I do appreciate your predicament, but I have a job, 3 children of school age and I did the technician by distance learning (about 3 hours a week if I was lucky) and therefore nobody to teach me (although for PEV and PCR - which I took at the same time - I did attend Sandy's revision day course, because certain elements were beyond me). The paper was thought provoking - and I have seen worse.

    Eva :D
