I would answer that I am a qualified accounting technician, licensed and regulated by the Association of Accounting Technicians and show them my current certificate, which lists the type of work I am qualified and licensed to do.

I am a FMAAT but would always describe myself as an accountant. I am a MIP and have worked within chartered accountancy practice since 1991, at managerial level since 2001, and actually do the work of a chartered accountant within my employment.

I say that I am an AAT qualified accountant. If they want to know more then I will tell them.

Some people automatically ask Are you chartered or certified?, without really knowing what they are asking, and I will say neither.

I know of at least 2 potential clients that went elsewhere because of it but I am not going to lose sleep over them.
