Hi there
I have just qualified and become a full member and now wish to go it alone and work from home. I would like some help into how do you start up on your own. Is there anywhere I can get this information.
How do you get your customer base?
What do you charge?
etc.
Any help would be much appreicated.

Re:Starting up
Kiwi,
I'm interested in answers to this as well.
I have been AAT member for 3 yrs but havent ever used it as I am employed. I now have a number of people (friends) which I do tax returns for privately each year & my client base is growing - do I really have to register as a member in practice ? I thought being fully qualified & a Member of AAT was sufficient for me to do self employeds tax returns ?
keen to hear others replies to Kiwis & my situation - I would say Kiwi you build your client base by several ways. Advertise yourself to get customers, through contacts you aleady have (friends & family), & from the work you do for both of them, through word of mouth to get more contacts.
Are you going to register as a member in practice ? (I havent)
Charge wise - it varies between who & what I am doing for them & how well they have kept there books.
Regards

Hi kiwi
If you search these message boards there should be lots of advice for you. It is a common theme!
Tim
If you are doing any work for your own clients then you will need to register as a member in practice without delay! There is a reduced rate for those with low income from self-employment (formerly registered MIPs as oppose to licensed MIPs).
You will also need professional indemnity insurance.

Re:Starting up
If you havent completed the AAT (as I haven't) you can't register as an MIP though can you?0 -
Re:Starting up
Hi
Tim, I agree with Dean you state you are an AAT Member therefore if you are already doing private work it is compulsory to register as a Member in Practice and to have insurance to cover you for the work you are doing.
Lyagirl as I understand it you are still able to do Self Employed work before you complete the AAT but you can not mention the AAT.0 -
Re:Starting up
thank you dean & sue,
i've been looking at this & looks like i will be applying for MiP over xmas & getting some insurance through the aat site - something i had overlooked, but it will also encourage me & enable me to go & get some more new clients.
I assume its all tax deductable stuff anyway ? so better to get that than give it to the tax man..
thanks for your advice. I'll be using this forum a lot more in the future
regards
