Is it possible to change client codes once they have been set up as customers?
I am changing my filing system and I can't seem to be able to do this without having to close down the customer account in Sage and opening up a new one. Surely it can't be that hard to do so?
Secondly, my assistant added some new nominal accounts with some imaginative spelling (!) and I can't seem to change them. Is there any way of doing this without setting up a new account?
('Dispersements' in particular is annoying me!)

This should be easy. In Sage Line 50, you open the Nominal Ledger module and choose the "Record" option. Type in the number of the account in the N/C box to call it up. You should be able to edit the Name box to say whatever you want, but you can't change the number. When I took over our sales ledger, one of the sales nominal codes was called "Licking-up services". Naturally I changed it to "Locking-up services" very quickly.dean wrote:Is it possible to change client codes once they have been set up as customers?
I don't think it is possible. Certainly you can set up new client accounts with your new naming system. I believe that you can transfer all the transactions across to the new account, but I'm not sure how.0 -

Thanks for your help. I knew there would an easy answer for the re-naming - just couldn't find it myself!
As for changing client codes, this one is still baffling me..
Anyone else got any ideas?0 -
Re:More Sage help..
As far as I am aware, you would need to set up a new code, and from now on in post only to the new code, then after year end you can remove redundant codes.
Can't come up with a better idea - sorry!

I'm with Claudia - a new code for each customer account is the only answer I know of, then delete the obsolete ones later.
You can change the customer code for individual transactions in the maintenance module, which might help you to put your new systems in place more quickly - nice job for a quiet afternoon!!

Thanks Claudia/Sheelagh.
New codes it is then. Using the maintenance module could be a mission given that all my clients are on monthly standing orders. Time to get a work experience kid in I think!

I am also on the point of changing our customer codes - my predecessor came up with some great ones - "MRSETAYL" "MRSJSMIT" which are a pain to find. Now do I look under M for Mrs, E for Edith or T for Taylor??
You can export (think thats the right expression) into excel, sort into alpha order (if really mixed up like mine) and recode using a mixture of alpha & numeric say TAYL001 SMIT001 then import back into customers. There is a way of hiding all the codes you do not want to use (but are still available to check history/activity of the account). I can't think how at the moment. Think you do a search for the ones you want to see and save the search as "New Customer codes"- but will check when I get back into work tomorrow and let you know. Unless anybody else can try & explain.
