Can anyone give me a list (or tell me where to get one) of exempt/zero rated items please?

    There's quite a lot on the HMRC website. You can download the relevant guides too.

    Then just follow the links - it's not the best of sites, but the information is there somewhere.

    Don't forget to make the distinction with exempt and zero rated supplies. In many cases this does make a difference!
