Software upgrade

I'm thinking of buying the latest Office package. Do I need to back-up all my Excel and Word documents and copy them back into the newer versions, or not?

I don't believe you need to do that Helen - I'm pretty sure the files you have made in your current version will just be 'built around'. Your original files will still open in the newer version as they do now.

It's just an upgrade isn't it.. even if you do have to back your files up, it will prompt you to do so before you begin.

Might wait until Chris wakes up - he's sure to know.

I think the version I'm using is from the previous millennium!

Edit: that's not supposed to sound like it does!

You don't need to delete or move the files while the software is being upgraded. They are just files with a certain format which will be read by the upgrade.

    Thanks Malcolm.

Download or buy off the shelf?

    Doesn't matter.

Think of it this way; when you use image editing software, it can view files of pictures you may have taken even before that software was on the market, so long as it has the right file type you're laughing.

    Your documents will NOT disappear.

I just wondered if there were any benefits or not to buying it as a download - apart from cost.

Personally, I like to have a CD.

What about Outlook Express. Presumably I would retain all my saved messages and addresses?

None that I can think of, but I'm open to correction from others.

I think so re your last point.

From my own experience, illiterate, commission obsessed acne-ridden and hair-gelled staff who went totally ga-ga when asked questions that didn't refer to the product spec on the goods themselves.

Well, I wasn't going to ask them anything - just check the price.

I remember when I changed my car, the salesman was very helpful. Two weeks later he was advising customers in PC World!

There is a student version which is cheaper - i'm not sure if the specification is the same.

    Scott.

I'd already gone down that route and not sure about the spec - but it is an improvement on what I have.

I use the student version of Office 2003 and apart from not having Access (which is a load of rubbish anyway) I think it's pretty much the same as the full 'pro' version.

PC World aren't bad on price, that's about all they have going for them. I usually do my research before I buy so I don't have to ask the illiterate, commission obsessed etc staff for advice.

I've just bought the student version from Amazon.

I only need Word and Excel, so should be fine.

    Thanks to all!

Thanks, but most of what I do is on Excel at work, at home I only use it for my personal housekeeping.

    Re:Software upgrade

As far as I'm aware this hasn't actually been released yet. You can, though, download a trial version from http://www.microsoft.com.

I had a look at the beta vesion some time ago and hated it - although that might have more to do with familiarity than anything as there's some major interface changes.

I'd also put in my usual Microsoft caveat that it would be better to wait 6 months for all the inevitable bugs to be discovered. The release has already been put back several times, so there's pressure to get it out soon whether it's entirely ready or not.

    Re:Software upgrade

Yeah that is what I thought Chris. I did download it, (the trial version) it made all my files turn into the 07 version the tells you that if you want others to work with them they need to download a conversion patch etc.

I then removed it and my previous install wouldn't work! So after re-installing and a complete waste of 2hours i'm back where I started!

However although it does look completely different it does seem to have some nice features.

    Regards

Will I lose all my email addresses and archived messages if I download the Outlook Express version?

I don't use Outlook so not 100% on this but I wouldn't have thought so. I think it's probably worth backing up your adress book all the same though.

No you won't loose any data, it's just a pain if you don't like the new version, i.e reverting back to the earlier version.

Although backing anything up is always good advice.
