SPLIT MANAGEMENT & FINANCIAL AAT COURSE

Hi All

Is it just me that has this view but would it not be better to split the qualification for AAT. I work in Financial accounts and love it. I struggle with the Management accounts side of the course it is a subject that I have no use for and no interest. The work load for this side of the course is nearly enough to put me off carring on with it. If you could choose which Financial or Management path then the course could include much more on the subject you are interested instead of cramming two very different subjects into one course. :?

But then you would not become an all rounded qualified accounting technician and you will need to understand both sides of accounts eventually....

I don't think it would be worth having seperate Management and Financial qualifications, and I say that as someone who would have preferred to spend more time on Management. What I would have liked is the capacity for an optional "Advanced Management Accounting" module to complement the tax, auditing and cash management modules. (and yes, I have done ECR, PCR and PEV)

Having said that, I don't like the fact that you can go through the course without dealing with tax (except for VAT returns at Intermediate), and would advocate a compulsory tax module, with the option of taking a more advanced module.

I can see the value of being able to specialise, but I also appreciate being given a broad base to work from. The hard part is defining the line between specialising in an area that appeals and rejecting an area that doesn't. The AAT have to make some difficult choices with the syllabus, and I don't envy them for it.

I enjoy the management accounting aspects. It's not relevant to what I do but it makes a nice change and keeps me interested
