What music hits the right note?

If you were only ever going to be able to hear one piece of music for the rest of your life, what would it be and why?
My choice would be The Lark Ascending by Vaughan Williams.
I'm not really a classical music fan, but that piece is so uplifting. It could be attached to any emotion you wanted and not constrained by lyrics written by someone else.
If I had to choose one piece forever - that would be it!

Re:What music hits the right note?
Wow, what a tough question.
Right now, it would have to be Pachelbel's Canon.0 -

Re:What music hits the right note?
Can I have Richard Wagner's Der Ring das Niebelung? The full four-night opera, please.0 -
Re:What music hits the right note?
But why? That's just as important as the music itself.0 -
Re:What music hits the right note?
Why?
Because it makes the hairs on the back of my neck stand up, it is great to relax to and can be uplifting at the same time.0 -
Re:What music hits the right note?
i couldnt pick one piece of music. depends on whether it has to be classical?0 -
Re:What music hits the right note?
I think it depends on you and the song!
Mine would be Elgar's Nimrod. Some people find it depressing, but to me it's the original wall of sound.
If I had to pick something with lyrics, that would be difficult - because if that's all you were able to listen to, it would become so boring.
A classic like Nimrod can mean whatever you want it to mean.0 -
Re:What music hits the right note?
Going extremely off track with the other music types here, but my own would be "Angel of Death" by Slayer!
I first heard it over twenty years ago and I still regularly listen to it even today, especially when I need a quick adrenaline rush. Apart from the iffy lyrics, there's just something about the screaming vocals, pounding bass drums and frantic riffing and this is the ultimate example.
Just can't listen to it when I'm driving though since it's so easy to edge over the limit!
Bit of an oddity, I know - I wonder how many other AAT members even know what it is?!

Haven't a clue - but if you were on an island for ever and a day, would that be the one you'd want?0 -
Re:What music hits the right note?
Now your talkin Blob, more my scene. Although Ive mellowed since my school days, a bit of NIN, Slayer, Sepultura or Pantera still hits the spot!!0 -

Poor Cleo - trying to bring some culture and deep thoughts into our lives!

Re:What music hits the right note?
I don't believe anyone could literally listen to the same piece of music every day until infinity. But just to prove me wrong, if anyone actually does, could they please make themselves known?
Ringtones and musical alarm clocks don't count!
It's not everyones cup of tea, but the fact that I still listen to this music from over twenty years ago is supporting evidence that maybe I could listen to it every day. I doubt people will still be playing Beyonce or Robbie in 2027!

Re:What music hits the right note?
I couldn't pick one song I don't think....although one song that I have loved since I was little is "King of Wishful Thinking" by Go West!! Always puts me in a great mood!
I would just sing whatever song I liked everyday, then you wouldn't be limited! I can't sing, but it always makes you feel happier doesn't it!
Take That made a good comeback after 10 years!0 -
Re:What music hits the right note?
I don't think I could pick one song because I like music too much and I like all different kinds. I could listen to any song you play and enjoy it

Re:What music hits the right note?
I think that all songs (plus this can be extended to films and books too) lose their f(l)avour after a few listens, especially nowadays where far less effort is put into their construction. I know that makes me sound like my Dad but your parents do have valid points now and again!
If you were to choose your all time favourite piece of music ever, then had to listen to it constantly for a month never mind forever - I argue that it would cease to be your favourite! Familiarity breeds contempt which is why I can no longer listen to old rock classics like "Stairway to heaven" and "Smoke on the Water". It's not that they're bad, just that I've over-heard them and choose not to anymore!

Re:What music hits the right note?
Now don't shout at me - but the open bars of David Cassidy's "How can I be sure?" - it's a cello, I think, and it is wonderful.

Re:What music hits the right note?
Tricky question...
I tend to agree with Robert. Hearing something repeatedly causes it to lose its impact - less 'oomph'. I go back later after not hearing something for a while, and it sounds fantastic. I tend to rotate listening accordingly, depending on mood.
If I was to stick to something which retains maximum oomph, then it would be Summer from Vivaldi's Four Seasons. Otherwise I mix it up with Cradle of Filth, Fleetwood, Pretenders, Virgin Prunes, Bauhaus, Metallica, etc. (Kids in America, Echo Beach, Cruel Summer, South of Heaven, Jesus Christ Pose, and so on...)0 -
Re:What music hits the right note?
Billy Joel - listening to it now - it has calmed me down and cheered me up both at the same time.

Do you have music on while you're working?
It doesn't matter how good the music is, I have to turn it off because it begins to annoy me!0 -
Re:What music hits the right note?
I have the radio on all day. As I work by myself from home, it's a bit like having company  .
Most of it I don't actually listen to, just in the background, but at this time of night, I do actually listen.
Oh yes - I also love U2.

Re:What music hits the right note?
I used to listen to Radio 4 all day - that was when I worked on my own.
I used to enjoy the plays and debates.
When I'm studying or writing - it has to be in silence!0 -
Re:What music hits the right note?
There are so many pieces of music that are so brilliant, but Born to Run by Bruce Springsteen and Anything but ordinary by Avril Lavigne are just the best for giving a great feeling.
But listening to Radio 2 is a brill way to listen to many classics

Re:What music hits the right note?
I couldn't possibly pick one piece of music. At a pinch something by Derek Bailey, AMM or Peru Ubu. I think whoever it was mentioned The Ring had the right idea. I'm no great Wagner fan but 4 days worth of music might keep you going better that a 5 minute pop song.0 -
Re:What music hits the right note?
I think the point is that you have to choose something you would want to listen to - not just something that would fill a void.

Re:What music hits the right note?
David Cassidy's 'How Can I Be Sure?' is a great tune.
Going on from the cello intro, there are some good pop songs out there that have been mashed together with classical music - prime examples being Barry Manilow's 'Could It Be Magic' and 'All By Myself' by Eric Carmen and more recently Celine Dion.0
