Me neither - but you have to admit they have got kids interested in reading.

Re:Books - that made you turn the page

I have to admit I jumped on the bandwagon in the media circus around the publication of Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire, if you'll excuse the mixed metaphor. I read the first three books (Philosophers Stone, Chamber of Secrets and Prisoner of Azkhaban) and thought "well, they're not fantastic, but they have their charms.", so I read the fourth (Goblet of Fire). Frankly I was not impressed, and resolved not to read the next one.

There are so many things wrong with it: Quidditch, the sheer whimsy of magic, Quidditch, the nature of the magical society (or absence), plot holes and more (especially Quidditch. I hate Quidditch. Can you tell).

A couple of years later, when the Order of the Pheonix was released, I relented and bought it. It was alright while I was reading it, but unsatisfying. Like chinese food- after a couple of hours I wanted something a little more robust. So I resolved not to read the next one.

A couple of years later, when the Half-Blood Prince was released, I did exactly the same thing. The bit right near the start where she wrecked her best character almost made me hurl the book across the room in a fit of rage. But I still read it.

I'll probably read the next one, too.

EDIT: I think it's worth a p.s. that I was 17 when I read the first three, and at that point I was already a fantasy fan- Warhammer Fantasy Battle and Advanced Dungeons & Dragons (Ravenloft & Dragonlance settings) in particular.

I've nothing against kids reading them (mostly) it's grown ups I take issue with - I think I should shut up before I get into trouble :)

Not that I've anything in general against grown-ups reading children's books. Philip Pullman's His Dark Materials trilogy was excellent.

I reccommend the godfather. Even if you have seen the film, there are very good plots and subplots picked up in the book around the substance of the film.

Angels and Demons was ok, except the end seemed to drag on twist after twist. Cant be doing with him after that so I dont think Ill bother with Da Vinci.

Anyone read anything by Lee Child?
