Anyone know how to explain the off-side rule, in simple (i.e. so that I can understand) language?

    Yes. Assuming we're talking football:

A player is offside when he receives a ball with fewer than two opposing players between him and the opposing goal, but not if the ball was played before this situation came about.

The first part simply means that there must be at least two defenders between you and your target goal when you receive a ball (from a pass, throw-in, etc).

Imagine four players are arranged in a line with the defending goal on the far left:

    GOAL-- Defender 1 -- Attacker 1 -- Defender 2 -- Attacker 2
If Attacker 2 passes to Attacker 1, Attacker 1 would be offside.

This means you are not offside if you do not interact with play, or if you tackle the ball from a defender.

The second part modifies this slightly and is best shown by example.

    GOAL-- Defender 1 -- Defender 2 -- Attacker 1 -- Attacker 2

If attacker 2 passes to attacker 1, and attacker 1 runs in front of defender 2 before receiving the ball , attacker 1 is not offside, because there were two or more defenders when the ball was played.

    Does that make any sense?

I'll have a pop at this.... just to mention though, you are NOT offside from a throw-in, and the offside decision is made not on the player receiving the ball but based on when the ball was played initially - only when the player in an offside position recieves the ball or makes an attempt to play the ball is the offside decision given.

To be in an offside position, firstly you must be in the opposition's half of the field - you cannot be offside when you are in your own half or on the halfway line.

To make it clear, when I use the word ahead I mean closer to the opposition's goal than any of the oppositions team apart from the opposing goal keeper.

If my defender passes the ball to my midfielder and the midfielder passes the ball to the attacker, the attacker receiving the ball must not be ahead of the last defender when the pass from the midfielder was made, if he WAS ahead and is intefering with play (IE, obstructing the line of view of the ball from opposing players or controlling the ball or interfering in any other way with play) then the referee's assistant will signal offside and the referee will stop play for a free kick.

If the pass made to the attacker by the midfielder was made when the opposing defender was ahead of the attacker, then the attacker is Onside.

If the midfielder passes the ball forward and there are 2 attackers in an offside position - the offside decision will not be made unless either of them make an attempt to gain control of the ball... in this case the play is still live and so long as the 2 attackers don't try to gain control of the ball, any other member of the attacking team (so long as they were onside) could run and gain possession of the ball - this merely means that the 2 original attackers who were in an offside position were not intefering with play and made no attempt to retrieve the ball from an offside position.... following on from this example - if another member of the attacking team actually did gain control of the ball then it is like the slate is wiped clean for the 2 attackers who were originally offside, in that the fact they can now go forward again and gain control of the ball via a pass.

Nowadays, in order for an offside to be given, when the ball is played forward to the attacker, there must be visib;e daylight between the attacker and defender (I dislike this ruling, doesn't matter if there's daylight or not, if you are further forward than the defender when the ball is played you are offside).

Hope this helps - i;m quite lucky really, my other half understands it perfectly well :-)

In simple terms - there has to be at least one opponent between you and their goalie.

The law has changed a lot in recent years, you never used to be offside from a free kick or goal kick so the player could have recieved the ball direct from either of those dead ball situations.

Failing that, there's always the persona of certain referees down the line.

As in my monster thread, you cannot be offside when you are in your own half when the ball is played.

    Re:Foul!

Its not difficult really is it. If there is no one between you and the goal keeper when your mate kicks the ball to you, you are probably off side.

    There you go.

I'm sure an Excel formula could be written to explain the rule.

I can watch cricket for 30 minutes, then I would rather iron my work clothes.
There's always football re-runs on whenever there's no live matches on, why watch cricket?
Maybe if I went to live cricket games I would be converted into a fan, but the only interesting thing in my eyes about england cricket team is Flintoff - and only cos he's local.
