I know this may ruffle some feathers here - especially seeing as I've been guilty of this too - but occasionally there are some serious discussions that don't quite fit it into any of the other forums so thus inevitably end up on the doorstep of this one.

However...

Can we please ensure that when someone does want to open a serious discussional thread, that we show due respect, moderation and restraint not to hijack it by endlessly posting one liners or other inane comments, followed by the inevitable chain of 'compensating' smileys? Occasionally we do want to be serious...

The ongoing study buddy thread should probably have been sufficient for 80% of the new topics recently opened on here. The main problem I can see with opening ten or so new topics a day which only attract a handful of comments, is that they are pushing some better ones halfway down the front page or even worse, onto the next one, ensuring some truly stimulating discussion is being lost in the mire.

Many thanks and best regards,

Robert

Might I suggest that anyone adds 'serious' to the end of their subject title?

That way none of us would hijack it and the originator won't be offended or disappointed with the responses.

Robert is quite right - but the Off-topic forum is driven by us all and we all have a say in the route taken.

    Serious subjects need serious reponses.

Surely that wasn't just aimed at moi?... it is a purely valid point.

Mine wasn't directed at anyone in particular - I'm as guilty as the next buddy!

No, it's for all of us to consider. I remember when I opened the "super-team" thread several months ago (which I still occasionally refer back to) and someone quite pointlessly posting a huge league table in there. I found that quite disrespectful...

There is a time and a place for banter - just not in every single thread. Marc is watching the gender pay gap thread so some serious discussion might be enlightening for us all?

    Kind regards,

    Robert

I think that worse than any perceived gender bias, is apathy!

Just to 'warn' everyone that I will be occasionally reposting this back to the top of the thread queue every so often for the next couple of days!

    Regards,
