Paul, instead of buying presents, offer to cook dinner tonight or do the ironing/other chore.

I agree with Rae about cards making money. I know about supply and demand but what justifies shops and restaurants slapping on huge mark ups?

    Re:Study Buddy

    Im going to a restaurant in Brum tonight. Just looked at the menu and got annoyed. At the bottom it states;

'A discretionary 12.5% service charge will be added to your bill'

    How is that discretionary?

    Re:Study Buddy

It means they can add whatever they like at THEIR discretion, that is, as they see fit.

Maybe we should pay as we see fit; therefore, if the service is poor, we pay the bill minus 15%.

    Re:Study Buddy

Grammatical question; I'm not sure if its just me interpreting it that way, but one of my colleagues keeps using the expression "thank you kindly" after she asks you to do something. I'm not sure why, but it always feels like a veiled insult- like she's trying to sound polite without being polite. As in "this is not a request", or "I shouldn't have needed to tell you to do this".

Does anyone know what I mean?

Like saying "I'm sorry you feel that way." when you offend someone. It sounds like an apology, it has the word sorry in it, but it isn't.

I never use the phrase myself. Does anyone else? And how do you use it. I only ever hear it from one person, and then when she orders me to do something (without authority, I might add).

    Re:Study Buddy

I use it occasionally. Just as a sort of informal term to colleagues I get on with. Nothing malicious about it from my point of view. I see it as a sort of pi55 take on 'forced politeness in the office' But Ive never seen it as an insult even when people use it whole heartedly

You could argue that if the service was poor (or just for the sheer hell of it), then you could ask them to recalculate the bill minus this charge since it's not compulsory. However, it's certain that if you did this, you'd be unable to eat there again so it's up to you...

Even if the service was exceptional, I'd pay it but not leave a tip since they've already charged for one up front... cheeky sods.

    Re:Study Buddy

discretionary probably means that unless you read the small print and dont realise there is a charge that they will add it to the prices of you meal so that it looks as though they went up in the hour it takes you eat, and it wont state on your bill that it has been added!

    Re:Study Buddy

Discretionaries are normally applied to group bookings. They are harder to serve and create more work.

Very often they just share the bill without considering a gratuity.

That's why you often see this note on menus.

Irrespective of whether it's right or wrong, I've seen it from both sides.

    Re:Study Buddy

Think I might add one to our invoices too...

Service charge = "Oops, I've made a mistake calculating the cost of overheads in my business, can't afford to pay my staff but equally can't be bothered to reprint my price lists either so am therefore going to slap a whopping great hidden charge onto your bill once you've had the goods, make you feel obligated to pay and ultimately force you to grudgingly fork out for what at the end of the day is my cock up"

    Sounds about right...

    Re:Study Buddy

    Going back a few posts.

"Thank you kindly" can be seen as being sarcastic, but it can be a colloquial. Why do we say "Many thanks" when just the one "thank you" will suffice?

"I'm sorry you feel that way" isn't an apology. If you think you have offended someone then you are regretting that they feel that way; if you say "I'm sorry I have offended you" then that is an apoology, but all you are doing here is saying that you regret that THEY feel that way and that's it.
