Windows Vista clarification needed URGENTLY!!!

Short notice I know but I need to buy a new business laptop TONIGHT for use tomorrow! Unfortunately, this means it's gonna have to be a PC World or Comet rush job. I generally know the hardware spec of the machine I am after but the new Windows Vista OS is a bit of an unknown quantity here.
There are two home versions packaged with the laptops on offer - Home Basic and Home Premium. Since this is going to be a business machine and may need the extra operating system capabilities, does anyone yet know the difference? Is Vista Home Basic a rough equivelent to XP Home and Home Premium a rough equivalent of XP Pro?
Many thanks!
Robert

Re:Windows Vista clarification needed URGENTLY!!!
There's a full comparison of the verisons here. As far as I'm aware neither of the 'home' editions are really equivalent to XP Pro. The main difference between the home editions seems to be the premium has more multimedia toys.
I would advise you to ask the vendor... but hey it's PC World or Comet we're talking about.
PS Just noticed you're getting a lappy - premium has more mobility functionality which could well be a consideration.0 -
Re:Windows Vista clarification needed URGENTLY!!!
Thanks Chris. Looking at the specs, it appears that Home Premium seems to bridge the operating system gap that previously existed between XP Home and XP Pro.
If I'm really lucky though they might have clearance machines with XP Pro still on them! The reviews of Vista on Amazon don't appear too convincing that it's fully ready to go on sale yet...
I'll let you know what I get!

As a general rule, I reckon to give MS six months from the release of a product to getting it right (well as right as MS products ever are).0 -
Re:Windows Vista clarification needed URGENTLY!!!
I saw a programme on TV about this a couple of weeks ago and I definitely wouldn't buy Vista just yet.
Although the programme was all about its marketing, you really got the impression that the product launch was rushed.0 -

Got the machine, Chris - technophobes don't read this!
Toshiba Satellite Pro A120-160
Intel dual core running at 2ghz
1024mb RAM
15.4" widescreen without one of those annoying shiny screens
XP Pro
100gb HDD
Anti-shock protection and spill resistant keyboard
Only £642.50 with £100 cashback - oh the benefits of buying for business compared to home buyers! Oh and should I declare my private use to the Revenue? Will I Hell!

Well, let's hope Carly on the Technician Forum isn't reading this - she works for HMRC!0 -
Re:Windows Vista clarification needed URGENTLY!!!
Blimey - she admitted to working for HM*C - the accountants enemy?!!!
Just had a missed call from an unknown number on my mobile - maybe it was them already?! They work lightning fast when we owe them money, don't they?!!

I would think that from some of the other posts that crop up from time to time, she is not the only one.
What's the difference between a notebook and a laptop - other than Chris would call it a notty?0 -

Sounds like the start of a joke! I think of notebooks as being the ultra-portable kind, 1kg or less, miniature screens but with a massive price tag of £1,500 or more etc.
Whereas a laptop these days would have a screen size of 14" or above, probably 2.5kg minimum, less expensive and not so easy to hide in a bag i.e. it's obvious what you're carrying!
So it's a size issue at the end of the day and we all know how important that can be!

Quite so.
Oops. Messed up Robert's quote and not for the first time!0 -
Re:Windows Vista clarification needed URGENTLY!!!
Yes, and I've also noticed it's only my spelling mistakes you correct! I can feel a stitch up coming on...
Nearly 1,500 posts from you Helen but were any of the last thousand serious since you became matriarch of the Study Buddies?!
Surely you must now be the most prolific poster in Forum history?

Well, I prefer to dwell on the quality rather than quantity.
And I'm not correcting any of your spelling mistakes during Lent - but don't hold me to that. Might be easier to give up chocolate.

Re:Windows Vista clarification needed URGENTLY!!!
Going back to an old thread but seemed better than opening another new one!
For all us technoheads, have a quick read of these about Windows Vista;

http://pcpitstop.com/news/rob/rcheng0704.asp
Sneaky sods not to mention the seriously worrying privacy issues!
By the way, has anyone else played with Vista yet? I've had a quick play on a couple of new laptops and I hate it! Looks nice though, especially the transition effects. Doesn't make up for the severe compatability issues with older software however, which probably forms about 99% of the current software market!

Re:Windows Vista clarification needed URGENTLY!!!
XP Pro for me is the mutts nutts - saying that, why not escape the monopolic strangle-hold Microsoft have on PC Software and switch to Linux... almost zero threat for viruses, trojans and the like.
I won't use Vista until at least another 2 years until they have released countless updates packs.0 -
Re:Windows Vista clarification needed URGENTLY!!!
Vista is crap - from what ive heard they're still working the bugs out of it.0
