Do you really use more calories eating celery than you gain from eating celery?

Apparently...

On GMTV this morning, there was a woman who paid £70 for 100 diet weight loss chocolates. Apparently eating them made you lose weight. She didn't so was on LK Today complaining about how she'd been ripped off. DUH!
Personally, I think she'd be better off complaining to God about how she managed to be born with her brain clearly missing.
And women say they're cleverer than men!

Yeah, I should have seen that handing over seventy quid for a pre-18th century miracle cure is sufficient evidence of that...
Bugger, I've made your mistake too... the newly coined phrase a Baggyballsup...

Have you never given into temptation?
We shouldn't generalise. I'm sure there are one or two intelligent blokes out there.

False - negative calories are a myth.

Surely you can eat and exercise and thus burn off more than you consume?
Robert - we need a guineapig.

Re:True or False?
I have a dance mat at mum and dads for the playstation and one program is really good cos it tells you how many calories you burn with each dance. After each dance I burn about 4 calories.
.

Wow - that many!

Re:True or False?
Yep. It's awful. I got on it like 'this is going to be great, no proper exercise ever again!' I was expecting to burn about 50 calories per dance :oops:0 -
Re:True or False?
It's more likely to be 4 calories per minute.

Re:True or False?
IIRC, then theoretically you would expend more calories extracting the energy from celery than you would receive. So your body doesn't bother: the chemical processes of digestion won't work because the reaction won't be 'energetically favourable'. I suppose the energy used in chewing counts for something, but very little. Otherwise it'll just pass through.
As for the calories per dance thing, have you input your weight in it? When you move, the calories you expend are proportional to your weight: it takes more energy to move a heavier body. If the computer thinks you're a lot lighter or heavier than you are, it won't register the calories properly- i once told a treadmill I weighed 175kg (I meant 175lbs- I didn't notice it was in metric!)

Re:True or False?
I have a Garmin satelite watch which I wear when running. It accurately measures the distance by satelite.
If I enter my weight etc, it can also calculate the calories used.
It will also track my route and guide me home if I becomed weakened by the loss of energy
I think, for average routes (not too hilly), it's about 100 calories a mile. So for a long race, say a half marathon, I use more than I put in. I have energy drinks etc. But they're more mineral than calorific.
Although, within minutes of me crossing the line, it's all wasted!
