I am slowly getting to the stage where my leaning tower of filing is about to fall over, so a quick question please about how the rest of you organise your filing, as I will soon be running out of space...

For annual accounts etc how many years do you keep current?

Do you give old working papers, copies of tax returns etc back to clients, or do you keep them for the full 7 years? If so are they readily to hand?

Would much appreciate any views, as it is only 6 weeks until the next tax years :lol: :shock: :roll:

    As I am only in my first year as a MIP working from home, I have the luxury and space of keeping hard copies of everything that I complete for my clients.
    However, I only keep copies of annual accounts and tax returns, all other paperwork is sent back to the client for their safe keeping but I do re-iterate that it should be kept accessible and for the 7 yrs just in case!!!!!

    I run a "paperless" office. Everything is scanned and disposed off. Invest in adobe and a scanner, you'll never look back.

    I was fortunate really, when I first started the business I went paperless straight away, so I don't know any different really.

    I would certainly recommend it, although the transitional period between paper to paperless is supposed to be a bit of a nightmare and if you've never done it before it takes a bit of getting used to.

    We have scanning software in our firm and it is fantastic. We don't have files anymore and it makes life so much easier.

    I'm sure there will be firms out there that would do a free trial so you could see how you get on. I imagine the market at the minute for scanning software is a bit like when mobiles phones first became popular so they'll be a lot of competitive firms begging for business!
