    Re:salary expectation

I work for HMRC and I earn £16.5k a year. I am 27. I have been there for 9 years. I started on £7.4k. When the National Minimum Wage came in we had to be given a payrise! hehe

I have put myself through AAT because I am likely to be made redundant in the near future. I'm doing Technician at the moment (passed PCR/PTC today :D ) When my time comes to leave I would like to be able to step into a role on pretty much the same salary level. This thread is scaring me!!! I'm probably going to start looking around local practices and try and sell myself on my taxes knowledge.

I think you need to consider your experience and knowledge, plus AAT as a complete package.

A practice would welcome you with your knowledge.

Agreed. knowing your way around HMRC would be a big plus to any private practice looking to employ you or the other AAT candidate.

Hehe, thats what I would like to think! I'm also IAB qualified in manual and computerised payroll and I've done my NVQ 2 in customer service.

I'm just hoping I haven't upset too many of the local accountants during the course of my career to date...I may start signing my letters with an office name!!

Once you have finished your technician stage you will easily find a job within a practice if you wish.

I'm based in the North West, and am half way through my intermediate stage and earn £17.5k pa, mainly based on my payroll knowledge, but you'll be in a similar position due to your tax knowledge.

But even if you have to find another job before you've completed Technician, your experience will give you a head start.

I worked as an Audit Manager in a practice without any qualifications - just experience.

These days things seem to be spanning the way of qualifications but experience is still an essential factor. Another factor i find is how you come across, not just your background and qualifications. If you get the right blend between them all then you could easily climb the corporate ladder.

I was on 15k with no qualifications and not much experience. I am now pushing 18-19k and still no formal accounting qualifications. When i complete AAT i would certainly be looking for something around £22k+, i realise the area of the Country makes a difference, and im sure living in Bristol account for some part of the salarys.

    Hope this helps.

Thanks for all the reassurance!! I know there are specialist agents that are very keen on recruiting ex - HMRC staff, just for their knowlegdge on fixed rate expenses claims etc, but when they charge 35p for every £1 of repayment recovered I do think they are slighty unethical!

I would rather work in a practice that offers accountancy and payroll services so I can do a bit of everything that I enjoy.
