Re:Rugby League
My parents have a holiday home on the Norfolk coast (in Mundesley), and I'll be going to uni in Norwich this Autumn. I've already had fun with mispronouncing towns like "Wymondham" and "Happisburgh". Can you suggest how I can learn to understand East Anglian?
I'm from Hertfordshire, so I think I speak normally!0 -
Re:Rugby League
Easy way to pronounce Norfolk names is to miss out the middle eg
Happisburgh - Haysbro'
Hunstanton - Hunston
Potter Heigham - Potteram
Hautbois - Hobbis
Problem is you can take it a bit too far - near us is a place called Sparham and pronounced normally.
As a family we know it as Spam
and then when you talk to other people, they think you are totally barking (which we probably are!)

Re:Rugby League
Any that do escape rarely come back!!!!!!!
What I find really scary is the number of Norfolkites that have never left the county  oh well - NFN - normal for Norfolk!

Re:Rugby League
Well, she only stayed there while her father was at an RAF camp in the 2nd WW.
Then it was back to deepest Dorset.

Re:Rugby League
I started out in Cornwall, escaped when I was 18 and somehow managed to end up back here.0 -
Re:Rugby League
I like Cornwall. Liked Carbis Bay and then back along the North Coast to a place called Trevaunance Cove (not spelt, quite right!).0 -
Re:Rugby League
I live in Devon. And almost every village name ends in Worthy. Pyworthy, Beaworthy, Woolfhardisworthy (what kind of hell name is that?!), Holsworthy... I could go on... Why do they have such stupid names?!
One day I am going to escape from here too

Re:Rugby League
Some of my local towns:
Hertford - Hart (male deer) + ford (river crossing)
Broxbourne - Brox (Badger in latin) + bourne (stream)
Hoddesdon - Odo's (Norman lord) + down (rolling hill)
Lots of other towns end in -ford or -don. Some of the stranger ones:
St. Alban's - Roman christian- the first martyred in England
Waltham Cross - the 'cross' comes from the monuments erected to mark the funeral procession of Eleanor of Castille, Queen of England in the 13th century.
