Hi, I am going to look after a small sole traders books for him. I would like to know exactly what i would need to keep. At the moment I use Sage for a medium business but I would like to spread sheet this. I was thinking of maybe bank receipts, bank payments and a bank rec. Would this be enough?
Would this be enough for all small buisness' because I hope to become self employed and take on more work.
I did read somewhere about PI insurance. Would I need this if i was only doing the book keeping?
Any help would be much appreciated

    Hi

    I am not a self employed bookkeeper, but I do the bookkeeping for my Dad's business - purely for AAT practice and obviously I wouldn't charge him! :-)

    All I keep is a cash book showing income and what type of income on left side and expenses/purchases and what type on right hand side, a petty cash book set out in the same way which I reconcile to the petty cash tin, a bank rec which I reconcile to the bank statements, a VAT log (paid out and received in) to help with his quarterly VAT return and a milegae log.

    He keeps all receipts, invoices, bank statements etc. for me.

    Sure, no probs!

    Can I just point out that it is simply a cash book, petty cash book, bank rec, VAT rec and a mileage record - just incase anyone thinks they'll be getting a whole set of accounts etc.....

    Hi all,

    I have just moved house and we do not yet have internet so I cannot send this to you just yet. As soon as I have it I will come back to this thread and send it - unless someone I sent it to previously can forward it on?

    I'm on these forums on work's internet. The file is on my home laptop and I can't e-mail it from home to work and my work laptop has no floppy drive, so can't get the file here!

    Funny how you miss something when you don't have it!! :-)
