Experiences Please

I am on my to Technician, and whilst I do realise that I am looking too far ahead, I often feel that I am never going to be able to do this 'for real'. I have a lot of experience in book-keeping,VAT and payroll, and want to go up a level to producing accounts etc. on a small scale. I dont plan to go on to be chartered.

I'd love to hear from people who completed AAT and are now working in practice. How did you progress from student to professional etc ?

    Re:Experiences Please

I guess it depends on alot of things including

    -age
    -number of years of experience
    -luck!
-if you're prepared to move employers
-if you're prepared to swop jobs for a pay cut to get experience (I guess that's getting a bit drastic!).

But assuming you're just starting out you're career it sounds like you're on the right track to me.

I remember thinking when I finished intermediate 'if I could just earn ten grand and have some variety in my job'.

5 years later I was thinking, 'how can I spend more time not doing work that makes my brain ache'

Ramble over. By the way I never worked in practice so I guess my thoughts don't hold alot of water.

    Hello lincs,

    Thanks for your reply.

You've never worked in practice - does that mean you're self-employed, or work in large companies doing management accounts?

Do I detect a little despondency in your message - ie - are you not enjoying the work? Do you have too much work?

I find your message interesting, because as I said before, sometimes I wonder what it will be like to do this for real.

I worked in idustry for while doing payroll, bank recs, nominal ledger work etc and then worked in accounting software (supporting and testing mostly, but also doing some work on design).

Any despondency is because I actually quit work to do a degree in accounting full time 3 years ago. i.e. I only have about 6 weeks left before the final exams and I don't really have a social life at the moment, and itsvery hard work.

Some of the harder stuff you may well never do. E.g. group accounts on technician level is only going to be done in the real world by someone very well experienced & well paid. If you don't plan to go chartered then it would seem very unlikely you would get involved in this. In fact perhaps it;s only on technician to give a certian exemption for the chartered qualifications - can't remember have forgitten the exemptions for AAT.

Things rarely turn out as you expect, but they usually at least turn out better than you expected.

    All in my humble opinion.
