I am halfway through the second year and keep hearing just a little longer and companies will start taking interest in your C.V. you will get a job as a jnr or clerk or something. I have been employed for about 10 years but none of these have been in accountancy roles. The last 5 years I have been an administrator for a communications company.
Over the last 6 months on top of my normal working week I have been working part time (up to 20hrs) for free for a well known practice. I knew at the time that the practice wouldn't have any permanent positions for me but I needed the experience. It Would seem that no matter how much work trying to gain experience no where will employ me because they can take kids fresh out of school for less money. or they say I just haven't got enough experience for what they need.
Am I suppose to just work seven days weeks plus college plus a young family until I qualify for AAT.
I knew it wasn't going to be easy but how are you suppose to get work when they all want qualifications and they all want at least 1 yr full time experience and even then only prepared to pay min wage for it.
Sorry not really a question but just need to get off my chest as i am really getting fed up.

Re:Does anyone else have this problem?
Hi
I know it is hard some times but just keep trying and waiting for the right time coming....just stick with it and one day you will get it
My situation is similar to yours. I have been working 6 months for free in a company after that my role changed to the accountancy roles. I am in the second year with the AAT and been working with that company for 3 years but they still pay me minimum wage.
What else can we do....when you & I are still at a low level of qualification, the employer tend to be tight with wages (In their eye we are an expenses to them )....but once you are qualified the employer can not do that anymore they have to pay you the market rate as a qualified professional.0 -

Hi Calon
I was dismayed to read your post.
I hope I can give you some tips.
Firstly, I suggest you stop working for nothing. All the time you do this, you might be getting experience, but they are taking the piss out of you.
Secondly, although I suggest you register with every local agency for accounts or even just data entry jobs. I started by doing this eight years ago and starting on £9 per hour. It must be much more than that now. The trip is to try and get a long term temping assignment and then you have your foot in the door. Once you are there you try to impress them and sometimes they take you on permanently. I have heard of this happening quite a lot. I certainly happened to me. They should also be impressed by your drive and determination to put yourself through the AAT examinations.
Thirdly, register yourself with the online job search companies like www.monster.co.uk. It is free and when I did this I had a huge response from potential employers and ultimately ended up turning people down.
I really hope this start getting a bit brighter for you soon. You seem to have a lot of determination and drive. Keep at it.
By the way, where are you studying?

Going off track, but Speegs is a female? I'd somehow always imagined you were a bloke!
You live and indeed do learn!

Re:Does anyone else have this problem?
OK Public announcement everyone.
I AM DEFINITELY A GIRL. Or at least I was the last time I looked.
For the record, Speegs stands for Spiegel, which is my surname. At work they call me Speegs because there are two other Sarahs and we all used to work in the same office.0 -
Re:Does anyone else have this problem?
Don't worry - they all thought I was a bloke too.

Re:Does anyone else have this problem?
Course you could describe some of the blokes as 'big girls blouses' but that's another story.
Apologies for going further off-topic.0 -
Re:Does anyone else have this problem?
Definitely got big girls blouses at my college.
We have this really dumb idiot in our class who actually walked out crying from the exam because he couldn't do it. This was on FRS.
I can call him a dumb idiot because I used to work with him in my last job and he bullied me out of it. Imagine how I felt when he turned up in my AAT class! He bragged about not doing foundation and then begged me for help with understanding the concept of double entry. The fool that I am helped him as far as I could. But talk about a baby. He actually cried!

Re:Does anyone else have this problem?
Sorry its taken so long to reply. I am registered with every local agency even registered with agencies based 50 miles away hoping to get better luck and commute but with no avail. According to all of the agencies companies are looking for people with more experience than I have and Jnr positions are few and far between.
At the moment I am studying in Swansea S.Wales.0
