Panicking about June exams

Hi all

I am studying with FTC and am hoping to sit my PLB exams in June. I work in an accounts and my employers are paying for my course. They originally wanted me to wait till September 2007 to do the course at college on a day release, but I didn't want to "waste" a year and was allowed to do it as a home study with the aim for me to sit the exams in June and to start college in September.

HOWEVER.....I am really really behind. I haven't even started on unit 1. I'm not trying to justify not studying, but my husband and I were going through a bad time and separated. We have now sorted things out, but I'm finding it hard to find the motivation to study. With 6 weeks to go should I just knuckle down and give it a shot or postpone my exams till December?

Sorry to hear that your marriage is heavily on your mind.

The best advice that I can give is: take a look at the exam papers, then see how much makes sense to you with working knowledge, etc. It is probably worth trying to cram it in, with some general knowledge areas. You should be okay with the PLB. The exam papers are at

There is a lot of helpful advice from other students - try using the search function for any problem areas. Be aware that the online deadline for entering the exams is IMMINENT!
Good luck. Hope it works out for you.

    Mandie

If you have already entered for the exams I'd knuckle down & give it a go. Give it your best shot but look on it as a "mock". The worst that can happen is that you are "unsuccesful". If you don't take the exam there is no way you could pass!

Good luck, with both personal and working life.

I had a serious health problem last year and drove to my December exam wondering if I would have MAAT engraved on my headstone - I'm not joking.

I have to say that focusing on the exam helped me. I don't know how I managed to study, revise, sit the exam and pass it - but I did!

    Only you can decide.

    Re:Panicking about June exams

I had a heart attack in march last year and only attended one more lesson before the June exam. I'd paid for it so I took it. I didn't expect to pass but to my surprise I did.
Everyone knows their own strengths and weaknesses and, whilst what Blobbyh says is true, not everyone feels the same.
If you've paid for the exam, then give it a go, girl.
If you haven't paid then it may be better to sit it out and wait 'till xmas. Only you can decide.
But, whichever you do decide, may I wish you good luck in both business and private life.

I think if you have entered for the exams, take them and use them as a revision exercise. You may pass. If you haven't entered, postpone until you are better prepared. However mental preparation is as important as study, and I advise you to approach any exam positively and dont focus on the possibility of failure. Have a good night's sleep before the exam, ensure that you are fully hydrated. Make sure that you have all your pens, highlighters etc ready well in advance and any other little thing that will reduce stress.
Best of luck in your future. And finally, remember the Golden Rule, DONT PANIC!

I was held up in traffic and needed the loo when I arrived. No loo paper!

I would always add that to my list of exam essentials, too!

    Good luck!

You employer sounds reasonable enough as they were prepared to pay for your studies and give you day release. It's your call! I was like this for my December exams and was going to do them, then I wasn't etc, I finally took them as "mocks" and passed!! As you've read from the other posts EVERYONE has been in a situation where their studying suffers at some point, whatever you decide to do, stick with it and don't beat yourself up if you decide to defer it, you've been through enough already.

    Re:Panicking about June exams

Thank you all for your advice.

I think I've decided to go for the exams as they have already been paid for and if I do fail it may just be the kick up the backside I need to motivate me. Also it will give me a feel for exams as the last time I'd ever sat a 3 hour exam was 4 years ago. I know I have had personal problems that have taken precedent in my life, but now where we have dealt with them I need to get my head down and study.

Thanks for all your suggestions and I will definately be getting the past papers to help me too.
    Take care all.

Know how you feel. I'm sitting the exams in June as well. I have had to miss quite a few lessons recently due to health problems but I am going to give it a go. I've looked at the past papers and they don't seem that bad. Plus my tutor knows when I miss a week I do the work at home.

    Mandie (& others...)

Your PLB exam will always have:
    (a) T accounts upto Trial Balance. (section one) NB can use 'Suspense Account' if have problems.
    (b) Bank Recs, Control Accounts, and Journals, plus general knowledge areas. (section two)

    For (possible) general questions-

    For other areas-

    Re:Panicking about June exams

    Thanks for all your support.

I didn't realise my name was that cool 8)

So far I am finding the course ok with no major issues. Although I am doing the course with FTC distance learning I am working in accounts and have got support from my colleagues.

I know this might be a silly question but do I need to work through unit 1 & 2 in order to start on unit 3. The exam itself I understand is based on unit 3 but I am wondering that maybe certain aspects of units 1 & 2 I will need to be understood before attempting unti 3. Any advice appreciated?

    Re:Panicking about June exams

In Unit 3 you will have to post to and balance off T accounts which was covered in the earlier units. I advise you to read the chapters covering these units to make sure you can post to the cash book and the petty cash book and then balance them off. Are you OK with the double entry? You will probably have to use a suspense account too.

    Best of luck.

    Re:Panicking about June exams

I'm understand the double entry but at some times get confused what to debit and what to credit. However since I've been using DEAD CLIC it's made it more simpler.

Suspense account.....so far means nothing to me.

Looks like I've got a few late nights coming my way...and this time without the alcohol!!

......4 weeks to go. (I'm kicking myself as I should be revising now, not trying to whizz through units 1 and 2!).
