    Hi All,
I "see" everyone is doing ok. I am crawling up the walls with boredom, obviously I can't drive either, I have been skulking around in the dark for 3 days and guess what, I can see you all in high definition now, so some of you need some work doing, ouch oh and those wrinkles....!! I have two very nice shiners so my prediction of 8) wasn't far off. Got to go back Thursday to see if I can drive but judging by what I can see today, then it shouldn't be a problem.

    Re:Study Buddy

I've always thought I was overworked

    Morning all.

It's my last full week at my job and, although I'm not involved in the interview process, I've been meeting some of the candidates for my replacement. I'd been wondering why there were two widely differing clusters of experience/qualifications.

It's because there are two positions. I'm being replaced by two people. Currently, I work 40 hours, but day-release for the AAT takes this down to 32 for most weeks. My 'primary' replacement- who will be doing the purchases ledger and other bits and pieces- will be working 40 hours and not given any study support (it's not being billed as a Trainee position any more). My 'secondary' replacement- who will be doing all the sales invoicing- is a part-time, 25-30 hours temp-to-perm position.

I'm not really sure how I feel about this. I've been saying for a long time that the company is getting too big for one person to do all the things I have to do in a normal week. Doubly so since the two credit controllers managed to drop their hours by three-eights (40hrs to 25hrs) and I had to pick up the slack. (I've complained about this part elsewhere- I won't go into it again)

Of course, both posts are better paid than I am for doing what is technically less work. If I didn't have such low esteem for the company, I'd have applied for the temp-to-perm one.

    *deep breaths*
    Nearly over.

    Graham

ps- I know ultimate means 'final', penultimate means 'second to last' and antepenultimate means 'third to last', but is there a word for 'fifth to last'?

Not if they were our bloody builders they wouldn't be. I just had to play the diplomat after one of our building contracts was cancelled and the directors refused to talk to - or refund - the customer concerned! So I just gave them a blank cheque to sign - which they did - so hopefully I can at least sleep tonight until the next crisis!

Graham - Maybe they're just taking the opportunity to re-structure. I expect they all realised that the job couldn't be done by one person - but weren't sure how to solve the problem.

You resigning has given them the chance to make changes without having to re-write existing contracts.

Fifth to last - near the back of the field.

    !0/1 to win on No1

Many years ago in one of my pervious incarnations, I worked as a betting shop manager for two years, so I admit to knowing a thing or two about odds...

... so it always gives me a wry inner smile when on TV programmes and they see something that's a dead cert, someone always shouts out odds of "10/1" or whatever. That means if it wins, you'll get back £10 plus your £1 stake. However, 10/1 in a four horse race means it's a rank outsider, not the hot favourite as scriptwriters seem to think! Anyone who knows anything about bookmaking, would know that the more certain something is to win, the lower the odds become e.g. 2/1 or 7/4 against until eventually they become odds on, e.g. 1/5 meaning you'd win £1 for putting £5 on. Which makes it almost a dead cert but still not guaranteed to win - nothing ever is!

    Gambling masterclass over for today!

I like it when I'm in a quiet mood and people come up and say "Smile" to which I usually reply, "You drop dead in front of me then and I will".

Sort of makes a grumpy day slightly less grumpy - just not for them maybe...
