Can anyone advise me how to get a SA agent reference please. I have an agent reference for PAYE but cannot seem to get SA reference.

I called HMRC and they said "this is a new one".... !! and were not able to give me any other help other than suggest I write in with my query!

There must be a way to get this reference number!
Any help greatly appreciated. :?

    Presumably you used this website to get the PAYE reference? If not this is the website you need.

    Thanks Dean, but that site is to register and you still need a SA reference number! Its how to get this number that I am having problems with.

    I had to ring my local tax office to get one and they pass the message to an 'agent maintainer' who in turn will contact you within in 3 working days with a number.
    I am expecting mine either by post or a phone call by Tuesday.
    Nightmare trying to find out how to get one though.

    Dean, unless I am going mad (possible!), You still need the agent reference number in order to enrol for the SA online service.

    If there is a more specific link regarding how to obtain a "reference number" then i would love to know, but the link you sent is to register - I think!

    It is for VAT, but surely it's the same process for each service? Short of completing the online forms and trying it myself I doubt I can help any further - in which case you will have to telephone afterall. :lol:

    For SA you do need to ring your local tax office. Or do what I did and phone the online helpdesk, they gave me the direct line of the person I had to speak to and I got the reference over the phone.

    If you send in a paper 64-8 there's a box to tick indicating that no UTR has been issued yet. Then when the client appears on your online list you'll be able to see the UTR that has been issued.
    God knows how long it'll take before the client appears on your list though! (but at least doing it that way means you don't need to SPEAK to anyone at HMRC :wink: )

    Thanks all!

    I have rung local office (which is in Scotland - I live in Sussex!!) - and had to write in to them requesting the agent number. They don't do it by phone anymore. So fingers crossed the magical number should arrive soon!

    It is a nightmare trying to obtain your number. There is no online registration for SA agents. The only way to get a reference is to submit a 64-8 for one of your clients listing you as their agent. When the 64-8s are processed, if no reference comes up when they enter your postcode as an agent (i.e. the first 64-8 they receive from you) then a new reference is generated by their system. This then becomes your agent SA reference.

    The system is not fool-proof and you will find that you may have a few SA references floating around.

    Twice a year HMRC send out agent copies of SA statements as a bundle and this is when you find out how many references they have set up for you! The agent reference is disclosed on the front of the bundle but I have not seen it on any other correspondence.

    Every HMRC telephone operator can actually view your agent reference on screen so if you kick up a fuss they will tell you it.

    In fact, as part of the security identification procedure, one HMRC operative asked me to confirm my agent reference to them. This is when I got very agitated to learn that they can all access your agent reference on their screens; particularly as I, similarly to you, had spent months trying to find out what it is!!

    I have just noticed the reference on the front of my bundle of SA statements is different to the one I was given and used.

    I did make a fuss when I spoke to the technical guy at the Coventry office, he told me my reference was issued in September 06 and I should have received a letter from them, as I hadn't he gave me my number. I was also supposed to receive a copy of the letter confiming my reference and I am still waiting for it!
