Reclaiming overpayment of tax

Has anybody any idea how my daughter can claim back tax she paid last year whilst a student, when she has (foolishly)destroyed the P45 and pay slips?
She had more than one job so was taxed at BR on the second job. Her total income for the year is way below her allowances.
She rang the local office yesterday and was told they had no record of the company she had worked for even though she quoted their PAYE reference! They advised to ring her ex employer, but they weren't very pleased when she left and were hopeless with paperwork so I don't think they will be very forth coming.
Any advice would be welcome.
Thanks

Re:Reclaiming overpayment of tax
If she fills in Form R40 and sends it to the tax office they will send her a repayment.
You can download a Form R40 from the link below.

She may have to guess how much she earned and tax she paid, i have just done one for my daughter and she got her money within a couple of weeks.

Thanks Terry,
Would you believe she did a busines module for her degree, but when it comes to finance still relies on me. Wonder why

Re:Reclaiming overpayment of tax
If she (or her employer) paid the money into her bank account it should be fairly straightforward to calculate how much she received net by going back through her bank statements, and from that you can calculate the gross amount.

Re:Reclaiming overpayment of tax
She paid in her wages by cheque so I can now calculate her gross pay.
Got the form, got the info, now all mum has to do is put them together.
It was a bit worrying when the revenue said they had no trace of her previous employer, but I'll let you know how I get on.0
