Hi all,

Yes it's me again the aat's favourite technophobe.

What I need to ask is does anyone know where I can buy the following, I've tried "googling" but without much success.

I'm looking for either a 32" or 37" or 42" Flat Panel TV Screen. But you all say but you can buy them anywhere. Wait a second.

As I no longer have and will continue for the forseeable future not to have a TV Licence as I got rid of my small TV. (I'm not paying for all the rubbish that's on there). I'm looking for something to hook up to a seperates system so I can on the rare occassion watch a movie on DVD.

Basically I want a large screen without the "TV Tuner" gubbins in it. Rooms in the house are too small for a projector and screen.

Thanks have a great week, still looking for a break into accounts, may have some agency interviews this week. Keep your fingers crossed.

If you're happy to watch pictures on a computer size screen, buy a second hand 21" CRT monitor for your computer, hook it up as normal through your soundcard to your hi-fi and watch your stuff that way. I think you're unlikely to get any bigger than this without an in-built tuner.

Secondly - and I couldn't possibly recommend this since it's probably not legal - but there is widely available software that allows you to watch streaming television from faraway countries through your broadband input.

I think that TV detector vans work on the principle of visting and detecting signals from residences that appear on their database as NOT having a licence so it's all at your own risk. The licence is only less than £15 per month anyway while the fine is much more than that, and while terrestrial TV might be crap most of the time it's one of those things we unfortunately have to suffer to stay legal.

You cant actually get a television without a tuner in it, as that is what makes it a television.
There do exist monitors though, tv studios used them, but their difficult to get hold of, & its likely youd only get a 2nd hand one, & it wouldnt be a flat screen.
If your looking for a large screen size, it would be a specilaist screen designed to be connected to a computer, & their not designed for normal moving images, like you get on a dvd.

Also, if you have a video recorder, or dvd recorder, they contain tuners, so youd still need a licence. If you have a licence, you can have freeview as well, dosnt cost any more.

Just out of interest..... do you need a licence if you watch for example '4 On Demand' on your pc?
Or download programmes to watch later?

If you have anything in the house with a tuner in it, you have to have a tv licence.
If you just download the occasional programme on your pc, & it dosnt have a tuner card, & you dont have a tv, video, or dvd recorder, you shouldnt need a licence.

    Technically, that's not true.
I did my research about it a while ago. You just have to DECLARE to the TV licensing authority that you are not going to watch TV, and make sure that your TV is not plugged into the aerial. They have very efficient ways of telling if you ARE watching TV through an aerial, and if you are discovered, you get in a LOT of trouble!!!

    Look at this;

    http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Sony-CPD-G520-21-Flatscreen-CRT-Monitor_W0QQitemZ230158309348QQihZ013QQcategoryZ174QQssPageNameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem

99 pence for a 21" monitor - but only if you live in Milton Keynes (as a certain Sheffield Wednesday fan does!)

I promise you that it's not me selling that.

However we have a CRT monitor at work which we are trying to give away so if you want it you can have it for free. The downside is you will need to pick it up from MK and relatively soon as we are moving offices and don't want to move it with us!

Let me know and my email address is in my profile if you don't want to do it through the forums.

P.S. I don't know much about these things I just assume that any old computer monitor (pre flat screen) will be okay.

    Annette,

Thank you for your very kind offer but I shall decline gracefully, as my want is definitely a flat widescreen type.

Also that one for sale on ebay weighs 67.4lbs.

5 stone, I'm trying to shift that amount of weight myself I'm certainly not going for that. Just checked item sold.

    Thanks
