Incomplete Records - no records at all !

Hi all,

I have been contracted to work for a company whose premises and records have been totally destroyed by fire. I am quite comfortable with the theory behind this and am looking forward to the challenge - but that is not say that I would not appreciate some pointers from practical experience !

I am awaiting the statements from the bank and will then set about the control accounts to work backwards etc

Any tips would be welcomed and any advice on an hourly rate for this type of work. It will be settled as part of the insurance claim. I usually do book keeping and managment accounting at £15 per hour but am thinking that £25 per hour is acceptable for insurance purposes ?

    Hi Sevren

I would charge £25 p.h. for this type of work as the 'brain strain' will be much greater than normal bookkeeping and management accounts.

I have different rates depending upon the complexity of the work involved and also where clients are really messy.

    Good luck with it!

If only my boss could see this - he refuses to have off site back up of our system. Because "it will never happen to us".

Good luck - it sounds like quite a challenge!

    Many thanks for response.

I think that it is one of those things that is either going to go really well or really badly !

Jan - I hope it never does happen to your boss - having seen what happens to a business owner when it does I would well recomend it !

I have the feeling that if anything does happen it will be my fault! :(
So I am working on getting the server backed up automatically even if it means changing discs every day. Old fashioned I know but at least it would be something.

Twice I've had to restore from back-ups. The question from support of "when did you last do your backup?" always sends a shiver. I do mine evey single night - without fail.

We back our Sage systems up once a week and the one week the whole system went down, it hadn't been done - so we lost 2 weeks work, that was bad enough but if we didn't back up at all we would have lost 8 months worth!
