Dear All
I am interested in undertaking the AAT qualification and I was wondering if anyone could give me advice on a few areas.
If I have done accoutancy related roles in previous jobs, is there someone at the AAT who I can contact about exemptions from exams/skillsets?
Also I was wondering how long people were finding it takes them to complete all three levels? If someone has done finance related roles in the past, how does the course content compare? Also I know there are two different ways to do the AAT qualification, either Diploma or taking all three levels, what have people found to be the best way?
I would appreciate any advice/feedback offered.
Many thanks

Re:New student member
Owen,
It is best to decide WHO you are going to have as your AAT provider, are you going to college or home study? When you have decided, they will ask you about your previous experience and advise you on where to start eg, it could be Foundation or Intermediate. The only exemption you get is not having to do Foundation if it is applicable. You will have to sit one exam for Foundation, two for Intermediate, three for Technician are compulsary and then a choice of two others if that is what you want to do (both tax exams). There are also a few skills tests to do along the way if you can't provide any workbased evidence. I have taken 3 years to do the course but I did it on home study and I'm also taking the NVQ route.
Good luck deciding, it is worth taking.
best wishes

Dear Mandy
Thank you for your advice, I was hoping to get some sort of day release from my new employer so I can take the AAT at Stevenson College here in Edinburgh.
How have you found doing the home study method?
thanks

Re:New student member
Hi Owen,
the home study suited me personally as the thought of going to college for one day a week fills me with dread!!! (Also my employer who paid for the course wouldn't allow day release). I prefer the "as and when" approach as it fits in around my home and work life although you do need to find some discipline.
I have just passed my last exam and I have done 6 of them with first time passes on them all, so home study does work.
Cheers

A new visitor from my home town, welcome to the forum.
If you can't cope with distance learning and you can't get day release, then do the evening classes.
At my college here in Rotherham, it runs from 5:30 to 8:30 , two nights a week.0 -
Re:New student member
Hi Owen,
I have now had 4 years of working alongside an accounts team, i'm classed as part of the Finance department but have never had FULL hands on experience of working IN an accounts team dealing with the TTs and debits / credits. What I know is what I have picked up on myself.
I did the Foundation course last year at college and it was OK, but it started taking it's toll on my home life and I decided to stop the course.
I have missed studying the course and still chat to a lot of people who I met on here and as such have decided to start again, although this time will be distance learning.
As with how long it takes poeple to complete all 3 levels, that depends on how you take to the course.
