    Going off topic - as we sometimes do on here - and far too ashamed to post this on the big boys and girls forums, but I discovered my petty cash tin had been stolen this morning. Yes, a very insecure moment from me and a moment of opportunity for someone else, but I've had bigger things to think about lately...

    From looking at my balance sheet, I previously had an asset of ร‚ยฃ510.92 which included about ร‚ยฃ300 of cash with the rest being receipts to be posted when I did the expenses.

    Should I just simply credit the petty cash account and debit the balance as an expense to the P&L, "Theft of petty cash tin" or summat? More importantly, what should I do with the 99% certain suspected offender?

    Tell the director, call the police! If you are to embarassed then replace the cash yourself (If you can afford to) and then kick c**p out of the person who stole it.

    I suppose if you left the tin out, you might be responsible and have to consider replacing the cash.

    I cant believe that people cant leave things without people(creeps) steeling them, we leave money out (petty cash and wages) all the time and in the 15 1/2 years ive worked here never has anything been stolen.

    No, we haven't called the police but yes, I have informed the directors (or at least one of them, the other's on holiday). We both suspect it was one of the factory lads (and family neighbour of one of the directors), who despite being known as a bit "naughty" was taken on and given a chance to redeem himself. Sadly, it looks like we were wrong but suspecting him and actually proving it was him are two different things.

    His days are definitely numbered here now though...

    Sorry for your loss, Robert, but one wonders why petty cash was not kept in a locked drawer/cupboard or safe? Especially if you knew that you had a rogue on the premises.
    By the way, tampering with the mini scooter carries a longer number of community service hours than tampering with the rider does :lol:
