My DFS Tips

Hi All,

Following a couple of PM's and threads on here I thought it appropriate to post a thread offering my advice on how I would approach the DFS paper now as students are tackling this paper in taught courses. DFS has a huge syllabus and can be quite daunting. Some of my online friends are doing DFS this time and hopefully this will assist them get through it in December.

You need a basic but broad knowledge of the entire syllabus. Question spotting is dangerous and is not a good exam strategy. Certain tuition providers offer "tips" as to what they think will come up. I don't think these are worth the paper they are written on and in my opinion they merely go to encourage question spotting.

You know you are going to be asked a question on: consolidated financial statements, ratio analysis, cash flow statement (possibly) and be asked to write a report/memo. It is worth mentioning that marks will be available if you do what you are asked by the examiner i.e. write a report or a memo. A report should be laid out as a "report" which your tuition provider will tell you how to do. A memo is an informal document and should be laid out as a memo.

The key skills, I think, you need to focus on to pass are as follows:

- good consolidation techniques (income statement and balance sheet)
- know what an associate/joint venture/subsidiary is and what %age holding/controlling interest constitutes an associate/joint venture/subsidiary
- ratio analysis
- relevant IAS's
- cash flow statements
- incomplete records
- commentaries on financial statements/ratio analysis

I have mentioned in previous postings and PM's that numbers only form PART of a professional accountant's role. The ability to communicate what the numbers represent and communicating to non-financial orientated individuals about financial statements is a critical aspect of an accountants position. DFS recognises this hence a mix of computational/discursive requirements. Concentrating wholly on numbers is not advised - you need to know what the numbers are communicating. Failure on DFS can happen due to the following:

- not answering the question asked, merely answering a question you would like to be asked
- not relating a given scenario to relevant accounting standards
- having the ability to calculate the numbers but not explaining them thoroughly enough
- the dangerous "question spotting"
- not having a thorough knowledge of the syllabus
- bad time management

The IASB has produced a summary of the international accounting standards which can be found at:

http://www.iasb.org/Summaries+of+International+Financial+Reporting+Standards/Technical+Summaries+of+International+Financial+Reporting+Standards.htm

I would suggest you print a copy of these out for those standards which are examinable and refer to them as an aide memoir during the revision process. A comprehensive guidance of those standards which are examinable can be found at:

http://www.aat.org.uk/servlet/file/Support booklet for DFS (unit 11).pdf?ITEM_ENT_ID=30862&COLLSPEC_ENT_ID=34
A few weeks prior to the exam I will publish an article in Accounting Technician on consolidation techniques and the approach you should adopt in tackling a consolidation question. It is important that you revise both consolidated income statements and balance sheets. Do not question spot and assume that because an income statement came up in June, that a balance sheet will come up in December.

Finally, DFS is a tough paper. I found areas of the June paper very demanding when I was preparing my suggested answers. It is a technician level paper so it is technically demanding - however don't let that put you off.

Feel free to PM me if you need guidance on any aspect of DFS.

Kind regards
Steve

    Hi steve

Having read your Posting, I am kind of bit more positive but am still concerned of resitting my DFS. I failed it in June 2007, but hope to resit in December 2007; do you know of any intensive refresher courses or revision courses in the northamptonshire are or surrounding counties? I would greatly any help or advises..

    Thankyou.

    Hi Mrs D

Have you tried BPP, they do good revision courses?

    Re:My DFS Tips

Just to echo Annette - BPP are excellent. Their revision courses are intense and they focus on key areas of the syllabus. They can be quite expensive but it is well worth it. I did all my AAT and ACCA studying with BPP and they were faultless.

    Kind regards

    Re:My DFS Tips

The revision classes tend to focus on key and complex areas of the syllabus and they tend to do a lot of question practice in timed conditions which I think will help you focus on your weaknesses and address them in time for the exam.

    Re:My DFS Tips

Thank you for the positive feedback.

Keep my tips in mind during the revision process. My main advice which will get you through this paper is:

    DO NOT QUESTION SPOT!!!!

Forget what came up last time. The examiner knows question spotting happens. If you cut corners you get a raw deal. Do what I have said above and you will be fine.

    Hi Justly,

You have lost me, Justly or maybe I need a holiday!

If you can point me to where it says in my thread that I predict consolidated balance sheets coming up this time I will amend it accordingly.

If I did put that in my thread I am contradicting my advice not to question spot as I don't know what will come up in DFS this time. My tips were done based on the format the paper has followed since its inception.

    Actually justly, your lack of understanding basic English is once again causing you a problem. Steve's words were in fact, the exact opposite;
    peugeot wrote:

I personally think Steve's statment is clear enough but I will try to clarify if further for you anyhow; for every five DFS papers that are set, all will have a consolidated question but four will probably be for the balance sheet and only one for the income statement. June's paper had the latter so many may see this as a false sign that the next four papers will only have balance sheets and not learn the income statement. This is commonly called question spotting and is very very dangerous. There is every chance the examiner may try to "catch candidates out" and again use an income statement question. Candidates should therefore learn how to do both the BS and IS.

I suspect that you actually have a grudge with Steve hanging over from previous threads, but please be assured that of all the excellent contributors on here, I and many others would unanimously agree that Steve is undoubtedly the most highly regarded of all.

    Regards,

    Robert

    Re:My DFS Tips

    Sorry justly!

Tutors will invariably concentrate more on the consolidated balance sheet than the income statement since it's much tougher and therefore appears on papers more often. However, there are always some who will try to second guess what's on the papers and then plan their revision around these guesses which is incredibly foolish.

Good luck for your December exam!

    Regards,

    Robert

    Re:My DFS Tips

    Justly,

I am not a tutor, I am not (nor have any connections to) the examiner and I do not profess to know what is going to be on the exam paper in December's sitting. I have consistently followed DFS for a number of years as one my areas of specialisms is in accounting standards and their application where I work.

My tips were done based on feedback I received when I published my suggested answers to the June 2007 DFS sitting. As you know, my answers were published on the accountancy students website as this site does not have the facility to post attachments. It received nearly 300 downloads and as a result, I received a lot of feedback and questions subsequent to my answers. Some students were extremely disheartened when my answers went up - but they passed. Other students queried how my answers were calculated. Indeed, even today I received a PM from a student who was struggling on cash flow statements.

I use this feedback to develop the tips I posted on the above thread. The tips were derived from students remarks about their performance, what they had difficulty on, why they had difficulty in certain areas and subsequent to the exam results release, their overall outcome.

The tips were not and (and are certainly not intended) to encourage question spotting, which I think is a dangerous tactic to adopt when studying for professional examinations. The tips were designed, primarily to help students who have failed DFS in June (moreso those doing home study) to help them adopt a structured learning approach. Certainly one of my "online" friends is re-sitting DFS this time and I hope it helps him get through.

I know you, yourself, are studying DFS this time round and I hope your studies are progressing well. However, you must appreciate that sometimes readers can find your attitude somewhat abrupt and difficult to comprehend as I suspect English is not your first language.

Please bear in mind, Justly, these forums are here to help both students and members but constantly challenging a contributor's answer or recommendations is not going to make you popular. Disagreements are inevitable on these forums (and can provoke healthy debate), but I would implore you to read the thread thoroughly before airing your disagreements. In this case, you should have realised that my tips were not intended as a prediction of the content of the December 2007 examination.

    Kind regards
    Steve
