I am planning to resit the PTC exam in December and was wondering if I can use the same books as I used for studying for the June sitting (I think they are the FA 2006 version)?

    Hi

I'm about to start Technician and my books are 2004 and 2006 versions (bought 2nd hand)

My tutor assures that they are still relevant.

    Good luck with your exams!!

As the Budget is presented in March, the same FA will apply for exams held in the same year. So, you'll be OK with the same book for June 2007 and Dec 2007.

In any case, the only real difference with older textbooks is that the rates will be different - the actual content will be much the same. If I'd failed last December I certainly wouldn't have bothered forking out on a new book for the June sitting.

Re-using previous books should generally be okay but there are subtle changes that you ought to somehow be aware of if you do intend using books relating to old Finance Acts. For example, the change in computer BIK's that took place between 2005/06 (where there was a limited exemption) and 2006/07 (no exemption). I'm sure I saw this tested in a recent exam paper to see if candidates knowledge was up to date.

And of course, don't forget the major changes in the tax bands themselves, not just the allowances, for 2008/09!

Of course, the choice is up to each individual and I'm not openly endorsing book sales for Osborne, BPP etc but I'd hate to marginally fail any exam because I didn't fork out the required twelve or so quid in order to get the latest editions!!!

    Regards,

    Robert
