which package best for farm accounts

Hi

I have taken on a new client which is a farm with a turnover in excess of £2m. They currently use Farmdata which is a single entry accounting system, which I find pretty basic.

They are open to suggestions for a new accounting system. I currently use Sage Line 50 Financial controller for my other clients, but I have not done accounts for a farm before and am not sure if this is the best option. I know it has an Agricultural Chart of Accounts. Does anyone else do farm accounts and if so what do you use?

They also require payroll software for 10 permanent workers and about 50 seasonal workers (usually EU students, but some form elsewhere with no NI No.s). I have been advised that Moneysoft is good and can deal with students. Again if anyone has any advice, I would be greatful to hear from you.

I have one large farming client and they use Farmplan as it integrates with other farming packages such as crops, spraying, animals.

However, having used for 6 months or so, I still haven't overly got to grips with it, and dont particularly like it - but then I am a Sage-babe.

Farmplan also have a bolt on payroll called Earnie (how corny is that!) which is OK - basic but does the trick. I think that if you have a certain level of Farmplan, then you get Earnie for free.

    Most large farms use Farmplan.

I think that Sage would do the trick, as long as you didn't want to use the other bits - such as animals/crops etc - ie use it solely as an accounting package.

Interestingly, Jimmy's Farm use Sage - make of that what you will :lol:

I assist in the audit of a farming client with a turnover of £5m and they use Sage Line 50 Financial Controller and Sage Payroll without a problem and have done for a number of years.
The problems they have had, have been with the users rather than the accounting package itself

Thank you Claudia & Krispi. It seems like Sage Line 50 would be sufficient for their needs.

And being organic farmers, "Jimmy's Farm" might just convince them.. :)
