Dear all
I am studying for DFS, have only completed chapters 1 - 3 + chapter 6 cash flow statements of Osbourne books there are 8 chapters in total.
I was planning to sit the exam in Dec 07 + a PEV re-sit. I have been on holiday for 2 weeks and anything I learnt before has been wiped completly and I feel I do not have enough time to study for DFS for Dec.
In reality am I right in thinking I have run out of time and should wait and sit DFS in June 08 and just concentrate on revising for PEV and sit just that in Dec 07. Or are both achievable if I put the time in (bearing in mind DFS is a new subject for me and so learning from scratch) I work full time so study time is limited to evenings and weekends
Advice would be appreciated
Thank you

Re:dfs what are the chances
DFS chapters 1-3 and 6 pretty much cover most of the number crunching stuff you'll encounter in section 1 of the DFS exam.
Chapters 4 & 5 cover the main IAS'es - any of which could crop up - that you'll be expected to give short written answers on. Don't take this as Gospel, but I personally think that if you're decent enough on the number crunching but slightly weaker on the general accounting knowledge, you'll still be usually okay as long as the advice you give/the points you write aren't completely erroneous!
Chapter 8 covers consolidated accounts which sound scary but once you've mastered the basic principles they usually aren't too difficult.
Chaper 7 comprises the whole of section 2 of the exam so you MUST learn this to pass the whole thing, however there are various methods to help you memorise the formulae and comment on the ratios. I have some flash cards that you can cut up, laminate if you wish and carry around with you. They worked for me, so I'd be happy to send them on to you. Let me know your e-mail if you want them.
Although your confidence currently seems low, remember that today is only the 1st of October and the exams are still over two months away. You're at least as advanced in DFS as those on a college timetable so I think you have plenty of time to learn the rest of it.
Regards,
Robert

Re:dfs what are the chances
My college class will be sitting DFS in December. We started term on 17th September, and thus far haven't really been taught much, we've mainly been going over the principles from Intermediate to make sure we still understand the underpinning knowledge.
None of us feel we'll pass the exam at this rate, but the college has good results historically, and one assumes they always work in this way.
If they trust their pass marks to us being at this stage 2 months from the exam, it must be more than possible.
Stick at it. learn all you can - do your best.0 -
Re:dfs what are the chances
We are using Osbourne books for DFS and we used them for all courses so far. I have always found them good but is it me or does the DFS book seem a bit disjointed? terms are used quite often before they are defined (amortisation was one in Ch 4) and in Ch 6 they start commenting on cashflow statements pages before they explain what the key points to look out for are. Maybe its just that I amused to being a bit spoonfed in the past but this book seems a much lower standard than the others used so far and also the other books we are using this year....mind you I am finding DFS a bit of a challenge - more the IASs than anything else.... I think the volume of material is much larger than I am used to. :shock:0 -
Re:dfs what are the chances
The trick with the IASs is to have a basic understanding of how they work rather than get bogged down trying to revise them in too much detail. For example, IAS 18 (Revenue) has certain criteria that have to be met for revenue to be recognised. It is helpful to have a summary of each IASs key points and in terms of IAS 18 have the criteria listed on flash cards to kick start your memory.
A key revision technique would also be to apply IASs to scenarios - even when the question does not actually state the requirement - as this "backs up" your answer and shows the examiner you are able to apply your knowledge to a given scenario, rather than regurgitate text book contents.
Kind regards

Re:dfs what are the chances
we was told that advise at our college.our tutor said not to worry about getting all details but just do a basic approach to the standards.
